Job Summary

The Associate Director of PreHealth Academic and Professional Development will provide academic support for Carle Illinois pre-health students, with a specific focus on the Carle Illinois Postbaccalaureate Program. This will include co-developing and co-teaching a three-part Professional Development course that will be a required component of the Carle Illinois Postbaccalaureate Program. These courses will equip students with essential skills and strategies for successfully navigating the medical school admissions process, excelling in their training, and securing competitive residency placements. Through these courses and individual mentoring activities this position will support students in building strong academic and extracurricular profiles, identifying meaningful service and research opportunities, and crafting compelling application materials including personal statements, CVs, and recommendation letters.

This position will work with the postbaccalaureate program development team to develop the educational content for three Professional Development courses in alignment with the course objectives and deliver the courses.

The curriculum for these courses and the associated program is overseen and subject to review by the Carle Illinois College of Medicine Graduate Curriculum Committee and the Office of Academic Affairs. Course Instructors are required to be familiar with the mission, vision, and values of CI MED and adhere to relevant policies. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, with programmatic oversight provided by the Postbaccalaureate Program Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

Course Responsibilities

Course Development Responsibilities:

  • Meet with CI MED leadership and staff to ensure that the course meets the desired expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Postbaccalaureate Program Director and other faculty to align educational content across the program.
  • Work with the course development team consisting of the Postbaccalaureate Program Director, Curriculum Designer, Director of Graduate Studies, and CITL staff to:
    • Develop course objectives aligned with program objectives.
    • Create session objectives aligned with course objectives.
    • Develop course instructional content.
    • Create assessments aligned with session objectives to appropriately determine acquisition of course content.
    • Develop any needed rubrics to grade course assessments.
    • Develop a course syllabus that provides students with clarity regarding the focus and educational requirements for the course.
    • Create and maintain a course Canvas page that helps students navigate the educational demands of the course.

Course Delivery Responsibilities:

Pertaining to Course Operations & Delivery

  • Serve as Faculty of Record and finalize course grades.
  • Actively participate in course evaluation exercises and processes.
  • Develop and implement Graduate Curriculum Committee approved plans to address course concerns and identified deficiencies.
  • Participate in operational program meetings with the Postbaccalaureate Program Director, Course Instructors and support staff.
  • Assist with reviewing applicants for the Postbaccalaureate program.
  • Create, maintain, and ensure a culture of professionalism and a safe, supportive, and effective learning environment for students.
  • Implement curricular guidance and policies established by the Office of Academic Affairs and curricular leaders.

Pertaining to Students

  • Serve as a point of contact for student feedback/concerns on the courses.
  • Ensure that expectations of the courses are clearly communicated to students.
  • Coordinate with appropriate campus offices to support approved disability-related academic accommodations in accordance with university policy.
  • Engage with students through online instructional activities/sessions.
  • Be responsive to student communication via scheduled office hours and ad hoc meetings to clarify concepts and address student concerns.

Student Mentorship Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic counseling and coaching to students to ensure they reach their potential and achieve their professional goals.
  • Meet with students to evaluate their academic support needs and provide guidance on enhancing their health profession applications. This includes assisting with the development of a compelling personal statement, advising on strategies to strengthen their candidacy, preparing for successful interviews, and advising on how to compose an impactful professional school application.
  • Meet with students to assess their need for academic support services and help them develop effective habits, active learning strategies for studying, and effective preparation techniques for health profession entrance examinations.
  • Design, organize, and run programs and workshops for students at that enhance their professional development and academic achievement.
  • Create academic support resources (e.g., slides, videos, handouts, study plan templates) to help students meet their academic and professional goals.
  • Provide ongoing advising support to students in achieving academic and professional development goals.
  • Maintain confidential, accurate documentation of advising interactions in accordance with university policies and data privacy standards.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology, Biological Sciences, Higher Education, or other relevant fields.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in educational training, educational counseling, higher education administration, education, or related experience. A PhD or EdD (including ABD) in a related field may be substituted for work experience.
  • Experience conducting educational workshops and seminars with both large audiences and small groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology, Biological Sciences, Higher Education, or other relevant fields.
  • 3-5 years of experience in educational training, educational counseling, higher education administration, education, or related experience. A PhD or EdD (including ABD) in a related field may be substituted for work experience.
  • Experience supporting students from a variety of backgrounds and educational experiences.
  • Experience mentoring students over virtual platforms.
  • Experience with data visualization, dashboarding, and advanced statistical analysis.

  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting established deadlines.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support program goals.
  • Ability to communicate complex academic and professional development concepts clearly and effectively.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
