The Associate Director for the Office of Grants and Contracts (OGC) within the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), is a highly experienced sponsored research leader who assists the Office of Sponsored Programs Associate Vice President (AVP) with setting the vision and direction for the Office of Sponsored Programs, under the auspices of the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge (ERIK). The Associate Director, OGC, participates in and contributes to the overall operations of the Office of Sponsored Programs. The Associate Director is responsible for providing leadership, strategic planning and oversight for all OGC activities in alignment with OSP and ERIK leadership.

The individual in the role will be responsible for exercising sound judgment in independently managing and administering assigned sponsored programs; responsible for program planning and development, proposal submission and project administration; establishes and maintains strong working relationships with Principal Investigators (PIs), department administrators and sponsors within assigned constituency; provides assistance and oversight with preparing proposal budgets and institutional assurances; understands university's preferred positions and negotiates contracts and agreements that support institution's position; continually monitors fiscal performance and status of required deliverable items; provides guidance to Principal Investigators (PIs) and administrative staff related to sponsor requirements, approvals and expenditures; ensures compliance with sponsor and university requirements; assumes responsibility for larger efforts, such as multidisciplinary and centers projects. The Associate Director works cohesively with OSP Associate Directors to provide leadership and direction to the Sponsored Program staff; supervises and develops professional and support staff, coordinates staff training and conducts performance reviews; coordinates administrative functions of OGC; resolves personnel issues; serves as a mentor/coach for less senior program officers and coordinators and assists them in managing non-standard awards and contracts. Works cohesively with the other Associate Directors by managing the recruiting and retention of OGC staff.

The Associate Director assists senior management with review and analysis of business processes and establishes/participates in cross-unit teams to develop effective procedures and associated training materials. The Associate Director will serve as subject matter expert and/or develop and lead training/outreach programs for research community, including PIs, department administrators and OSP staff; and serve on organization-wide committees. The position will have a relative complex distribution of advanced duties that vary with the constituency assignment.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 7 relevant years of experience in research administration
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, federal or private agency sponsors, contract and grant regulations, procurement, budgeting, accounting and financial management
  • Knowledge of research administration compliance requirements, applicable laws and regulations
  • Customer service and problem-solving experience.
  • Experience supervising staff and leading large teams in a high pace and remote work environment
Desired Qualifications
  • 12+ years of experience managing a large volume of varied projects;
  • Experience in research administration in an institution of higher education
  • Contract negotiation experience
  • Experience with electronic research administration tools and systems (e.g. Grants.gov, FastLane)
  • Familiarity with Workday financials and HR systems
  • CRA (Certified Research Administrator) certification
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the internet
