Job Description

The Associate Editor is a key member of the magazine’s editorial team, contributing original reporting and writing about campus life, alumni experiences, academic research, university governance, and the connection between Harvard and the greater world—as well as contributing to the magazine’s editing efforts. The ideal candidate is an experienced, enterprising journalist who is creative, energetic, comfortable working with a close-knit team, eager to dive into any topic under the sun, and excited about writing everything from a snappy headline to a breaking news story to a deeply reported longform feature.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Writing short- and long-form items for the print magazine and website, from Q&As to deeply reported features
  • Covering breaking news connected to the university and higher education
  • Performing line and developmental editing, working with staff and freelancers
  • Assisting in the selection and guidance of student fellows
  • Developing story and format ideas
  • Assisting in the proofreading process for the print magazine
  • Contributing to multimedia content for the Harvard Magazine website
  • Collaborating with design and multimedia teams to optimize stories for online engagement and reach
  • Assigning stories to freelancers
  • Contributing to the planning process for the website and print magazine

Working Conditions:

This is a hybrid job that requires being in the office in Cambridge, Massachusetts at least two days every week, with additional on-site days required as needed for coverage and production.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience at a newspaper or magazine
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Strong reporting skills
  • Experience with breaking news
  • Comfort with tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to write longform features
  • Meticulous attention to accuracy and detail
  • Comfort with content management systems (such as Drupal) and communications software (such as Slack)

Additional Information

  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week

  • Work Format Details: This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
