Essential Job Duties:
The Technical Editor provides advanced, independent editorial and technical expertise in support of a cooperative agreement between CIPM and USDA-APHIS PPQ Science & Technology (Plant Pest Risk Analysis unit). The position supports the development of high-impact scientific and regulatory reports that inform national plant pest risk analysis and protect U.S. agriculture. The incumbent will work under a project lead serving as a Technical Editor supporting the cooperative activities between PPRA and CIPM.
Major Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Scientific & Technical Editing (45%)
- Independently edit complex scientific and regulatory reports for clarity, accuracy, consistency, and scientific integrity.
- Ensure information is presented in a clear, concise, and technically sound manner for federal and scientific audiences.
Regulatory Compliance & Document Standards (20%)
- Ensure all documents comply with federal, agency, and project-specific standards, including Section 508 accessibility requirements.
- Apply and enforce consistent formatting, style, citations, tables, and figures across multi-author documents.
Writing & Content Development Support (15%)
- Provide editorial and writing support to federal staff and cooperators, including drafting and revising scientific text as needed.
- Strengthen document structure, logical flow, and readability while preserving author intent.
Project Coordination & Collaboration (10%)
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support editorial workflows and meet project deadlines.
- Communicate editorial guidance clearly and professionally to internal and external stakeholders.
Quality Control & Process Improvement (10%)
- Conduct final quality assurance reviews prior to submission.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of editorial processes and documentation practices.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Minimum Experience/Education:
- Master's degree required in one or more of the following fields: Technical Writing. Familiarity with agricultural-related biological fields such as Plant Pathology, Entomology, Ecology, Botany, Weed Science, Crop Science, etc. a plus. For candidates with a comparable combination of education and experience, a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience will be considered.
Required Qualifications:
- Position requires excellent written and oral communication skills in English and a high level of scientific literacy.
- Must be familiar with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EndNote, etc.
- Requires professional judgment, autonomy, and specialized knowledge of scientific communication and federal documentation standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Post-Baccalaureate degree in technical or scientific communication or comparable combination of education and experience.
- Experience editing scientific/technical communication in English.
- Has scientific literacy in agricultural-based sciences (i.e., Plant Pathology, Entomology, Botany, etc.).
