We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student body for Associate or Full Professor Faculty with an Administrative Assignment as Associate Dean for Research in the School of Nursing beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year.
Key responsibilities for this position are:
- Promote scholarly productivity and faculty professional growth.
- Support and expand research initiatives, including grant development and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Ensure compliance with state and national regulatory standards for nursing education.
- Represent the School of Nursing in institutional committees, community partnerships, and professional organizations.
The Associate Dean of Research will work closely with the Dean, the senior leadership of the School of Nursing, other UTRGV health schools and colleges (e.g., College of Health Professions, School of Medicine, School of Podiatry, School of Optometry and UT Health), and with the broader University. Our faculty members are expected to actively engage in research and scholarship and seek external funding from a variety of local, state, federal, and private funding sources. The Associate Dean of Research will support individual faculty members in their research and scholarship and continue to grow the School of Nursing's research infrastructure and portfolio. The successful applicant will also be expected to teach in our undergraduate and/or graduate nursing programs.

Department/College BackgroundThe School of Nursing offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nursing. These degrees include a traditional BSN and 2nd degree BSN pre-licensure degree, an RN to BSN, along with graduate degrees in Family Nurse Practitioner, a Post-graduate certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health NP and our new Doctor in Nursing Practice (DNP) that started in Fall 2022. Our faculty teach on two campuses, in both Edinburg and in Brownsville. We have full simulation labs that offer state of the art educational opportunities for all our students. We collaborate with the other health science programs at UTRGV on interdisciplinary clinical experiences and work with hospitals throughout the entire Rio Grande Valley. UTRGV is committed to preparing its students to succeed, and seeks faculty who are prepared to help in this goal.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualifications for Associate Professor:
- Earned doctorate in nursing or a closely related field.
- Strong record of achievement in research, scholarship, teaching, service, and community engagement, consistent with expectations for the rank of Associate Professor.
- Demonstrated teaching effectiveness, including evidence of innovative pedagogy, curriculum development, and student mentorship.
- Established research agenda, with peer-reviewed publications and scholarly contributions that reflect growing impact in the field.
- Experience in securing external funding, with evidence of grant writing and participation in funded projects.
- Active involvement in professional organizations, including presentations at regional or national conferences.
- Documented university and community service, showing leadership, collaboration, and alignment with institutional mission.
- Eligibility for tenure, meeting all institutional criteria required for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.
- License to practice in their related field.
Qualifications for Full Professor:
- Earned doctorate in nursing or a closely related field.
- Distinguished record of excellence in research, scholarship, teaching, service, community engagement, and academic leadership, consistent with expectations for the rank of Full Professor.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence, supported by a sustained record of student mentorship, curriculum innovation, and pedagogical leadership.
- Sustained and impactful research portfolio, including peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals and scholarly contributions recognized at the national level.
- Proven success in securing external funding, with a strong record of competitive grant acquisition from federal agencies, foundations, or other major sources.
- National recognition as a thought leader or expert in nursing or a related discipline, evidenced by invited presentations, leadership roles in professional organizations, editorial board service, or awards.
- Consistent record of peer-reviewed presentations at national and international conferences relevant to nursing or health-related disciplines.
- Documented contributions to university and community service, reflecting leadership, collaboration, and strategic impact.
- Eligibility for tenure, meeting all institutional criteria required for appointment at the rank of Full Professor.
- License to practice in their related field.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Preferred Qualification:
- Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited university is preferred.
- A unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Texas.
- A distinguished record of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and sustained extramurally funded research (example: NIH, HRSA, foundations).
- Proven leadership experience in academic or health care setting.
- Proven ability to mentor faculty and graduate students in research and evidence-based practice
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to foster interprofessional partnerships.
- Experience with program evaluation, accreditation and compliance.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
