School Overview:

The School of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE), in the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University, currently has forty-one (41) faculty members and offers a BS degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), MS degrees in Systems Science (SS), Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), and Healthcare Systems Engineering (HSE), and PhD degrees in Systems Science (SS) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE). SSIE also offers a cutting-edge executive health systems program in Manhattan. With about 250 undergraduate, 200 masters, and 200 doctoral students, the School of SSIE is growing in numbers and in reputation. More details are available at http://www.binghamton.edu/ssie/.

Job Description:

The School of SSIE is expanding further and seeks one (1) tenured/tenure-track faculty with focus in the following areas:

  • Associate/Full Professor - Energy Systems, Storage and Policy

This position is sought to start in Fall 2026 (e.g., 2026-2027 academic year) and requires advanced expertise in 1) Energy Storage and/or 2) Energy Systems and Policy. However, qualified applicants in other emerging areas of industrial and systems engineering, such as autonomous systems, advanced/smart manufacturing, biomanufacturing, cyber-physical systems, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and healthcare systems engineering, will also be considered.

Ideally, the preferred candidate will have experience and expertise in one or both of these associated areas and be able to explore recent developments in energy storage and apply knowledge of systems modeling, operations optimization, integration with renewables, techno-economic analysis, sustainable materials, and recycling technologies to encourage economic growth and advance the adoption of clean and efficient energy solutions to build a more resilient and sustainable future. The successful candidate should also be open to exploring recent developments in evolving electricity markets. The outcomes of their research will help inform the design and implementation of robust energy systems, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply, even amidst the escalating challenges in this domain. Furthermore, their work will drive advancements in technological innovation, behavior change strategies, and policy frameworks, facilitating the transition towards sustainable, electrified, and energy-efficient residential systems with shared aims of mitigating carbon emissions while enhancing energy affordability, occupant comfort, and overall residential system resilience.

The position involves establishing externally funded theoretical and applied research in the respective disciplines and teaching at all levels (undergraduate courses through advanced graduate courses). Candidates are expected to have high potential to initiate and sustain an externally funded multi-disciplinary research program and to take a major role in advancing the research and academic mission of the School of SSIE.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in industrial engineering, systems science, or other related discipline by appointment date.
  • Effective leadership skills.
  • Record of research, including garnering funding and scholarly publications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education or experience in Energy Storage and/or Energy Systems and Policy
  • Teaching experience.
