Associate Professor and Director of Health Studies
Haverford College invites applications for an Associate Professor and Director of Health Studies, to begin Fall semester of 2026.
We seek to make an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, with tenure, in the health humanities or critical social sciences of health, including but not limited to medical anthropology and the history of medicine. We invite applications from scholars working on a wide range of topics, including infectious disease, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, non-communicable disease, environmental health, disability, cancer, substance use, medical education, the healing professions, health systems and bureaucracies, political economy of health, therapeutics and medical technologies, among others. We are especially interested in scholars who study health, illness, or health systems using ethnographic, archival, or other qualitative approaches; work that combines these approaches with spatial or epidemiological or visual methods is also welcome. The geographic area of focus is entirely open. The record of research and teaching should demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinarity and critical inquiry, facility with relevant social theory, and attention to intersections between race, racism, and racialization; gender, gender identity, and sexuality; economic inequality and social stratification; disability and difference; linguistic, cultural, and religious diversity; and/or nationality, citizenship, migration, and belonging.
Qualifications
Candidates should hold an earned doctorate in a humanities or social science discipline, or a closely-related interdisciplinary field. Professional experience and/or master's degree in public health is preferred but not required. We seek scholars who can teach and mentor undergraduate students with a range of academic interests, experiences, and backgrounds. Candidates must be able to teach introduction to health studies, an intermediate survey course in their subfield, and advanced undergraduate seminars in their areas of expertise. We are particularly interested in candidates who have administrative experience in building and growing programs, demonstrate the capacity to lead a multidisciplinary program, and have mentored pre-tenure faculty and students across disciplinary boundaries.
For this position, we are only considering candidates who (a) have received tenure and already hold the rank of associate professor or (b) individuals who are currently under review for tenure at their current institution. In the latter case, a tenure packet will be requested from finalists.
