Description
Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) are seeking a strategic, collaborative, and experienced physician leader to serve as Chief of Obstetrics. This director role is responsible for overseeing the clinical, operational, and strategic direction of inpatient obstetric care at YNHH. The Chief of Obstetrics will hold an academic appointment in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine. The Chief of Obstetrics works as a dyad partner with the Director of Women’s Patient Services YNHH. The director is expected to maintain excellence in quality, safety, culture and patient experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide vision, leadership, and oversight for all inpatient obstetric services at YNHH
- Oversee operation of the inpatient obstetrics units, partnering with faculty, community practitioners, midwives and trainees.
- Maintain leadership for quality and safety, including:
- Oversight of MCIC representation
- CLEAR program, TeamSTEPPS, and clinical debriefing initiatives
- Co-chairing OB Safety and Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) Committees
- Leading the OB Proactive Care Planning Committee
- Engaging with system-level safety, patient flow, and review structures
- Support restructuring efforts by helping to redistribute operational and clinical oversight across new and existing leadership roles
- Serve as a liaison between YNHH, Yale School of Medicine, and the Department of OB/GYN for inpatient obstetric matters
- Represent inpatient OB in hospital and system-wide initiatives (e.g., Patient Experience Forum, OB Council, Care Pathways)
- Mentor and support faculty in inpatient obstetrics, with a focus on sustainability, collaboration, and academic development
- Ensuring local clinical representation within system-wide planning and implementation
- Support development of associate and/or specialty medical director roles to maintain operational continuity
Qualifications
Qualifications include:
- MD or DO with board certification in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM)
- Eligibility for faculty appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level at Yale School of Medicine
- Demonstrated leadership in inpatient obstetric care, operations, safety, and quality
- Experience with multidisciplinary teams, systems integration, and academic healthcare environments
- Strong communication, mentorship, and strategic planning skills
