About the role

The Department of Education, in association with St Anne’s College, are seeking to appoint a full-time Associate Professor of Language Education. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.

The Associate Professorship is available from January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be made in association with a non-tutorial fellowship at St Anne’s College.

The post holder will conduct internationally leading research on applied linguistics and language education, including attracting funded projects in this area. The post holder will also likely contribute across a spectrum of academic programmes in the department including the MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition programme (MSc ALSLA), the MSc in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching, the MSc in Learning and Teaching (Modern Languages) and the PGCE (Modern Languages). You will develop and carry out high quality research, relevant to language learning and/or teacher education in language education and applied linguistics, drawing on this activity to inform all work related to the above programmes. You will be required to take on administrative and examining duties as requested by the department.

The successful candidate should have:

  • a doctorate, relevant to the field of language education.
  • an excellent record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications, commensurate with career stage.
  • extensive knowledge of current issues and future trends in the field of applied linguistics and language education, in terms of their relevance to practice, policy and theory.
  • notable record of funded research in the field of language education, commensurate with career stage.
  • substantial experience of teaching, supervision and examining at higher degree level.
  • a strong record of collaboration and teamwork.
  • expertise in a wide range of research methods.
