No Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities Reports to: Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Direct Reports: Library Director; Assistant Provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI); Faculty Fellows (as assigned); other staff as designated. Position Description The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs provides strategic and operational leadership to advance faculty success across all career stages. The role fosters an equitable, collaborative, and data-informed academic culture that values teaching excellence, scholarly and creative activity, and faculty well-being. As the Provost’s principal advisor and designee on faculty matters, this position leads key institutional processes related to promotion and tenure, performance evaluation, faculty development, and engagement. The Associate Provost also provides administrative oversight for the Library and the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI), aligning their programs and resources with institutional priorities for teaching, learning, research, and faculty achievement. Key Responsibilities: Promotion & Tenure (P&T)- Lead transparent and structured promotion and tenure processes for tenured, tenure-eligible, and non-tenure-track faculty.
- Guide continuous improvement of P&T policies and practices to strengthen equity, clarity, and institutional alignment.
- Develop and maintain standardized documentation, evaluation tools, and timelines to promote efficient faculty review cycles.
- Provide consultation and training for deans, chairs, and faculty on P&T expectations and best practices.
- Direct comprehensive mentoring and development programs that advance teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service across all career stages.
- Oversee new faculty orientation, onboarding, and institution-wide mentoring initiatives.
- Partners with deans, CTLI, and other offices to align professional development with institutional priorities and goals.
- Promote faculty recognition and engagement through targeted initiatives and awards.
- Coordinate training and coaching to strengthen leadership capacity of deans and chairs in managing faculty affairs effectively within their units.
- Expand professional development and leadership opportunities for emerging and aspiring faculty leaders across the University.
- Oversee the annual faculty performance planning and review process to promote fairness, consistency, and data-informed improvement.
- Support deans and chairs in addressing performance and conduct matters through coaching, consultation, and consistent policy application.
- Advance faculty equity and well-being by promoting fair workload, and advancement practices, fostering belonging, and supporting professional growth.
- Oversee annual Faculty Handbook revisions, training, and dissemination; provide training and outreach on policy implementation and impacts.
- Provide leadership in developing, interpreting, and implementing faculty-related policies and procedures that reflect shared governance and regulatory requirements.
- Advise on faculty grievance matters and collaborate with HR to promote fair, timely, and constructive resolutions.
- Provide administrative oversight of faculty data systems (e.g., Watermark Faculty Success, Coursedog) and generate reports to inform decision-making on workload, promotion, and equity.
- Tenured faculty member (if tenure is available) at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in a discipline aligned with the University’s academic programs.
- Minimum five (5) years of academic administrative leadership experience with at least three (3) years as dean, department chair, faculty senate chair, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated leadership in faculty development and the advancement of student learning.
- Strong organizational, analytical, operational, and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead collaboratively.
- Demonstrated ability to address sensitive issues in a non-confrontational manner.
- Academic administrative experience at the level of Dean, or higher, with broad knowledge of institutional and faculty affairs.
- Comprehensive understanding of faculty career progression and institutional structures that support faculty excellence.
- Experience with systems, such as Watermark Faculty Success, Coursedog, or course evaluation platforms.
- Demonstrated knowledge of teaching quality frameworks (e.g., Quality Matters) and Boyers Model of Scholarship.
