Associate Research Scientist

An Associate Research Scientist position is available in the group of Dr. Ulrich Hengst in the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York, NY. The Hengst lab is interested in compartmentalized signaling events in neurons, especially how signaling pathways originating in axons contribute to the pathogenesis and spread of neurodegenerative disorders. The successful candidates will work on an NIH funded project investigating the cell biological consequences of Sorl1 mutations. The research will be conducted in cell culture models, potentially involving primary neurons obtained from rodent embryos. The project encompasses various techniques, including biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and microscopy.

Responsibilities:

  • Will be leading an NIH-funded project that focuses on structure-function studies of Sorl1
  • Designing, setting up, validating, troubleshooting, and conducting a CRISPR-based screen.
  • Be responsible for data collection, analysis, presentation, and archiving.
  • Contribute to common laboratory tasks
  • Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, train graduate students and technicians in the group.
  • Will prepare grant and fellowship applications and manuscripts that report their findings.
  • Actively participate in weekly lab meetings, program grant meetings, and seminar series.
  • Other Duties as assigned

The position requires a Ph.D. or MD degree plus 2 to 3 years of postdoctoral research experience in neuroscience, cell biology, biochemistry or a related field with a record of productivity Prior research experience in primary or induced neurons is a plus. Successful applicants are expected to demonstrate a high level of independence, a willingness to learn new approaches and techniques, and the ability to think creatively about their research.
