Associate Vice-President (Research) (AVP(R))
The University of Manitoba invites applications for the role of Associate Vice-President (Research) (AVP(R)), a pivotal senior leadership position at one of Canada’s top research-intensive universities. This is a rare opportunity to influence the strategic direction, integrity, and impact of research at an institution with global reach and deep local roots.
Reporting to the Vice-President (Research & International), the AVP(R) provides institution-wide leadership across the full spectrum of research administration-strengthening research excellence, supporting scholars at all career stages, and ensuring robust compliance with national and international standards. Appointed for a five-year renewable term, this full-time senior administrative role begins July 1, 2026, or as soon as practicable.
The Role
The AVP(R) plays a central role in advancing the University of Manitoba’s research mission through strategic leadership, operational oversight, and policy development. As a trusted advisor and institutional leader, the AVP(R) ensures high standards of research integrity, responsible conduct, and equitable evaluation while fostering a vibrant, inclusive research environment.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Strategic Research Leadership & Policy Development
Leading the development and implementation of research policies, frameworks, and evaluation practices that promote excellence, integrity, transparency, and inclusivity. - Oversight of Internal Research Funding
Chairing the Internal Grants Program Committee and Internal Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Committee, and guiding the design, administration, and continuous improvement of internal funding programs. - Research Integrity, Compliance & Ethics
Supporting investigations related to the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), ensuring compliance with Tri-Agency policies, and overseeing processes for major externally funded research chairs. - Oversight of Ethics, Animal Care & Biosafety
Providing senior leadership to ensure institutional compliance with regulatory and ethical standards governing human research, animal care, and biosafety. - Leadership of Research Administration Units
Directly supervising the Office of Research Services and key research compliance and ethics functions, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and best practices. - Researcher Support & Capacity Building
Strengthening mentorship, funding opportunities, and equitable evaluation practices to enhance research competitiveness and success across disciplines. - Institutional Collaboration & Engagement
Leading high-profile research engagement initiatives and representing the research portfolio on university-wide committees, Senate bodies, and external advisory groups.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold a PhD with a distinguished record of research achievement, along with senior-level experience in research administration, academic governance, or compliance oversight. A deep understanding of Tri-Agency policies, research ethics, animal care regulations, biosafety, and CFI processes is essential, as are strong communication, analytical, and collaborative leadership skills. A demonstrated commitment to advancing inclusive research practices is required.
