Job Description

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY (BSU) invites qualified applicants to join our team as a probationary tenure-track faculty member as an Assistant/Associate Professor of Human Performance, Sport Health Physical Education Health Education.

Human Performance, Sport and Health currently houses undergraduate and graduate-level programs including five BS degrees in Exercise Science, Community Health, Sport Management and teacher licensing opportunities in K-12 Physical Education and 5-12 Health Education. The HPSH department offers graduate level course work for add-on teaching licenses in Health Education and Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) for teachers already working in the field. In addition, the department offers several minor programs related to sport management, human performance, health promotion and a coaching certification program. The department provides students with opportunities to engage in conference participation, internships, student teaching and field experience in schools and various major clubs and service learning with the community. The department is fully committed to equity and to diversity in our faculty and students.

Responsibilities of the Assistant/Associate Professor of Human Performance, Sport Health Physical Education Health Education include:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate Health and Physical Education content and methods courses with a focus on PK-12 teacher preparation, coaching certification and core curriculum courses, and courses related to human performance topics.
  • Supervise teacher candidates in clinical experiences, including practicum and student teaching in K-12 schools.
  • Serve as health and/or physical education teacher education coordinator; review and collaborate with Master of Teaching FasTrack health and physical education candidates and program director.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Minnesota PELSB teaching standards and complete program cyclereports required for program reviews and accreditation.
  • Engage in scholarly activity appropriate to a tenure-track position.
  • Participate in regular service to the department, university and community, and other associated faculty professional duties, including advising of undergraduate and graduate level students and contribute to student recruitment, retention and success.
  • Actively contribute to an inclusive and respectful learning environment that serves a diverse student population.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary, in-person, online, and hy-flex delivery where needed by the program; involvement in activities that support BSU’s Shared Fundamental Values: Civic engagement and leadership, international and multicultural understanding, belief in the power of the liberal arts and environmental stewardship.
  • Applicant is expected to contribute to a collegial and supportive environment that advances departmental goals, including curriculum development, program/course assessment, teacher licensure and other departmental governance activities.
  • Utilize D2L Brightspace Learning Platform and deliver distance online courses guided by best practices.
  • Advance your education while working as a HPSH department faculty member! The Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) master agreement allows faculty members to enroll in courses at any university in the Minnesota State System without payment of tuition or fees (except laboratory and special course fees). Up to thirty (30) credits per year are allowed. In addition, a faculty member’s spouse/domestic partner, or dependent children may share this right within the credit limit, but with waiver of tuition only.

Salary Range: Depends on Qualifications ($64,066 - $186,015).

Minimum Qualifications
Current or previous health physical education teacher licensures with a minimum of three years of full-time teaching in health and/or physical education in the K-12 school setting required; MN State teaching licensure preferred.
Earned Master’s degree in Physical Education, Health Education or closely related field at the start of employment. (Upon hire, candidate must be enrolled in, plan to enroll in, or have completed a terminal degree program with the requirement to complete within five years of appointment.) Completed terminal degree is required when applying for tenure and promotion.
Undergraduate degree in health, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, or related field required; physical education health education preferred.
Knowledge of/or willingness to learn relevant MN licensure and national program attainment/renewal requirements needed for accreditation.
Commitment to quality teaching is required through demonstrated effective communication skills, teaching skills, and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, staff and colleagues.

Preferred Qualification
PhD/EdD in health, physical education, teacher education, kinesiology, human performance, exercise science or related field from a regionally accredited institution at the start of employment.
Skills/ability to design and deliver in person, online courses and possibly Hyflex courses; experience with course management software, such as D2L Brightspace and knowledge of best practices with instructional design.
Practical teaching experience as a teacher of record in the K-12 Physical Education and/or 5-12 Health Education classroom.
Demonstrated experience working with and/or interest working with students and colleagues from multicultural and diverse backgrounds and using culturally responsive pedagogy and practice.
Demonstrated expertise in sport leadership and coaching, with a strong foundation in human performance, training and fitness.
Knowledge of or demonstrated involvement/membership in relevant professional state and national organizations (i.e. MNSHAPE and/or SHAPE America).
A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
