Departmental Overview
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association.
The Athletic Trainer provides intercollegiate athletes with injury prevention training, and evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
Responsibilities
- Applies professional concepts to deliver comprehensive, individualized and effective training to optimize athletic performance, prevent injuries and provide rehabilitation for chronic and acute injuries and conditions. Utilizes treatment plans incorporating full range of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques.
- Screens and refers injured athletes to athletic team physician or other medical services.
- Sport Team Travel.
- Provides moderate to complex rehabilitation of athletic injuries through the use of various therapeutic exercise programs.
- May maintain athletic training facilities and equipment, ensuring all athletic equipment is fully operational and training rooms are maintained according to standards.
- Report injuries, complete appropriate documentation, and maintain medical charts
- Maintains discretion and confidentiality and handle sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatment.
- Enforces safety procedures.
- Works in a collaborative manner and to organize and prioritize work assignments and develop recommendations.
- Able to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines
- Provides manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.

Required Qualifications
- Thorough skills associated with athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.
- Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.
- Thorough knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
- For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
- Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the athletic department.
- Strong skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of procurement function and campus budget requirements relating to athletic equipment and supplies.
- Strong ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.
- Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
- Certification and in good standing with the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer
- Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent years experience.
- Professional certification required.
