Job Description

Job Summary:

The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks an experienced Audio-Visual Recording and Streaming Specialist to support and advance audio/video recording, live streaming and production services for SEAS teaching, research, and events. This role focuses on the independent planning, operation, and troubleshooting of complex AV, recording, and streaming environments, primarily within the Science and Engineering Complex in Allston. The position collaborates closely with faculty, administrators, and technical partners to deliver reliable, high-quality recording and livestreaming services aligned with SEAS academic and operational priorities.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

Recording and Streaming Operations

  • Independently plan, configure, and operate audio and video recording and livestreaming systems for classes, meetings, lectures, symposia, and SEAS-sponsored events.
  • Support recording and streaming activities primarily within the Science and Engineering Complex, including high-visibility and mission-critical events.
  • Monitor recordings, livestreams and productions to ensure audio/video quality, synchronization, and system stability; troubleshoot and resolve issues in real time.
  • Collaborate with departments to develop and manage academic and event recording/livestreaming schedules.
  • Create and edit graphics as needed.

AV Systems Operation and Support

  • Operate and support installed and portable professional AV systems for courses and events, including:
    • Projectors, LED displays, and LED walls
    • Matrix and routing switchers
    • Crestron systems (e.g. DM, NVX) image capture, annotation, and presentation technologies
    • Live streaming hardware and software platforms
    • Portable media and recording equipment
    • Lecture Capture Recorders (Extron SMP & Epiphan Pearl)
  • Operate control room production and recording systems, including wired and wireless microphones, digital audio mixers, video switchers and camera controllers.
  • Troubleshoot networked AV systems in coordination with other team members, HUIT and Computing partners.
  • Work with vendors and manufacturers as needed to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

Technical Integration and Consultation

  • Serve as a technical consultant to faculty, administrators, and staff regarding recording, livestreaming, and hybrid delivery options.
  • Coordinate with SEAS Computing, HUIT, and AV teams to ensure systems align with University standards, security requirements, and infrastructure.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend AV hardware and software solutions to support evolving academic and event needs.
  • Ensure recordings, livestreams and productions are compliant with university policies.

Media Management and Documentation

  • Manage recorded media assets, including basic editing, file preparation, storage, and delivery using approved platforms and workflows.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for standard configurations, workflows, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Assist with equipment inventory tracking and lifecycle planning.

Operational Leadership

  • Provide guidance and mentoring to staff supporting recording, streaming and production activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of SEAS AV support services through process refinement and technology assessment.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Working Conditions:

SEAS campus spans across both Cambridge and Allston, MA. Frequent travel within and between our Allston buildings as well as travel to our Cambridge buildings may be required to provide support to our community. Travel could often occur within the same business day. Early morning, late evening, and weekend coverage required on occasion.

Physical Requirements:

The individual in this role may be in work situations where the ability to carry up to 20 pounds unassisted and to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds with assistance is needed. Standing and sitting for considerable lengths of time might also be required.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Minimum of three years’ experience in the use of AV equipment at the corporate, educational, live event or broadcast level.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Significant hands-on experience supporting audio/video recording and livestreaming in complex environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently operate and troubleshoot professional AV, recording, and streaming systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm and effective during live, high pressure, time-sensitive events.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong coordination skills
  • Proven interpersonal skills
  • Experience supporting AV systems, recording and streaming services in a higher education or research environment.
  • Familiarity with lecture capture systems, hybrid classroom technologies, and event production.
  • Working knowledge of networking concepts relevant to streaming and AV over IP.
  • Experience supporting accessibility workflows, including captioning and media compliance.
  • CTS Certification or comparable professional training.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and graphics.
  • Experience with lecture capture and course management platforms such as Panopto and Canvas.
