Job Summary/Basic Function:
This position is funded through a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The Basic Skills Ambassador supports eligible veterans in achieving academic success and preparing for postsecondary education through the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Program.
Responsibilities include providing individualized instruction in English, mathematics, basic computer skills, and college success strategies; assessing participant needs; developing academic success plans; and monitoring academic progress.
As a program representative, the incumbent conducts outreach, recruitment, and community engagement activities to identify and serve low-income and potential first-generation college veterans throughout the grant-approved service area. The position also represents VUB at community events and performs other duties as assigned in support of program goals and mission.
This positions work schedule is predominantly at the WSU-Ogden Campus, however, work requirements will require the employee to occasionally travel to colleges located within the grant-approved target area (Weber, Davis, and Salt Lake County).
Required Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelors degree with sufficient math and English composition to successfully tutor Veterans Upward Bound participants in English and Math
- One year of tutoring in area of concern (math, English, foreign language, computers, and/or language)
- Valid Utah State Drivers License
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred:
- One year of teaching experience in at least one area of direct concern (math, English, computers, foreign language, and/or science): formal training accepted
- Masters degree
- Expertise in basic skills instruction
- Experience in teaching basic computer literacy
- History of working with low-income and first-generation veterans
- Military veteran
