Position Highlights

A short-term research position is available in the Beilstein Lab in the School of Plant Sciences at the University of Arizona to work on the molecular mechanisms that govern plant reproduction. The candidate will work collaboratively with graduate student and undergraduate researchers to cultivate and phenotype transgenic Arabidopsis plants. In addition, the candidate will contribute to the development of transgenic Arabidopsis through Agrobacterium mediated transformation.

Duties & Responsibilities

Planning, initiating, coordinating, and managing laboratory experiments:

  • Prepare experimental samples from cultivated transgenic plants.
  • Participate in scientific data collections, reductions and analyses involving routine procedures characterized by moderate use of independent judgement.
  • Cultivate transgenic and non-transgenic plants.
  • Collect and record phenotypic data (pollen tube growth, fertilization, seed set) and genotypic data (genotype wild-type and transgenic plants), analyze, and interpret
  • Operate lab equipment (centrifuges, pH meters, thermolcylcers, microscopes).
  • Maintain research facilities and equipment and ensure compliance with safety protocols.

Revise protocols and procedures for pollen tube phenotyping.

  • Primary responsibility for refining protocols for pollen tube germination and growth in vivo.
  • Communicate revised protocols to graduate and undergraduate researchers.

Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at relevant conferences, prepare project reports and procure research data.

  • Prepare data summaries, charts, and outreach materials.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in establishing laboratory protocols.
  • Experience in plant genotyping (leaf and pollen samples) data collection.
  • Experience in monitoring plant growth, health, and stress.
  • Experience with statistical analyses using software like R, SAS, or Python.
  • Experience in handling and organizing large, complex datasets.
  • Knowledge of regulations governing transgenic plant material.
  • Knowledge or requirements for documenting and disposing of transgenic material.
  • Knowledge of plant safety guidelines.

  • BS in Plant Sciences or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of molecular biology laboratory work experience.
