BNL Postdoc on ATLAS and EIC
The Omega Group in the Physics Department has an opening for two postdocs to join in the study of Electroweak and Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics on ATLAS at CERN and for the experiments at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) being constructed at BNL. Applicants should have a strong interest in and experience with the LHC, RHIC, or EIC scientific programs. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
The Omega Group focuses primarily on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. The group has major responsibilities in detector operations and software development, and leading roles in the ATLAS High Luminosity Large-Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) upgrade. BNL serves as the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Project, the ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is an active U.S. ATLAS Center. The group is becoming involved in the EIC and has strong detector R&D programs on silicon detectors and in data acquisition.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participation in the ATLAS and EIC scientific programs with a strong focus on Electroweak and Beyond the Standard Model physics.
- Participation in the development and performance of physics and detector simulations for high-energy and nuclear physics.
- Development of new artificial-intelligence and machine-learning techniques for high-energy and nuclear physics.
- Close interaction with collaborators in the EIC and the BNL theory group.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ph.D. in experimental particle or nuclear physics or related field.
- Experience with high- and medium-energy nuclear and particle-physics experiments.
- Experience with data analysis and knowledge of statistical techniques for data analysis.
- Experience with computing and software for high-energy or nuclear physics experiments.
- Experience with machine learning techniques and tools.
- Ability to work in a large international collaboration.
- Hands-on problem-solving skills and clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals and delivery of presentations.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with pp, ep, and/or eA Monte Carlo generators and detector simulations.
- Experience with detector performance for high energy or nuclear physics experiments.
- Experience with detector R&D and/or construction.
