Cardiac Cath Technologist
The University of Michigan Congenital Heart Center is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Cardiac Catheterization Technologist for the Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Labs. This position is located at CS Mott Children's Hospital.
Performs various tests of multiple blood samples obtained through catheterization or other means from specific areas within the patient's heart or lung to determine the concentration of gases in order to aid in the physician's treatment. Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and related reports.
- Primary job responsibilities consist of the diverse role of monitoring and circulating during catheterization procedures on a diverse patient population with known or suspected congenital or acquired cardiac disease. Diagnostic as well as interventional cardiac procedures will be performed which include, but are not limited to angioplasty, transcatheter valve placements, stenting, biopsy, PICC line placements, and electrophysiology.
- Work closely with the Inventory Control Planner to maintain appropriate levels of stock in the labs.
- Assist with research protocols as needed.
- Set up, calibrate, operate, record data, and clean complex equipment used in the performance of both invasive and non-invasive assessment of heart disease.
- Assist in the maintenance of cine projection equipment, 35 mm film processing and other dark room equipment.
- Assist in defibrillating patients.
- Perform analysis of blood samples including oximetry.
- Assist the physician in the administration of drugs to patients.
- Monitor physiological status of patient including the EKG for arrhythmias, intra-cardiac pressures, intracardiac electrocardiogram for arrhythmia and heart block, respiration depth and rate, and assist in initiation of emergency procedures.
- Assist with the maintenance of the procedure rooms' inventory including catheters, electrodes, transducers, film supplies, projection equipment, and equipment necessary for a patient's safety.
- Assist with the use of and maintenance of sterile technique during procedures.
- Prepare written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and related reports.
- Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
General supervision is received from the lead cardiac catheterization technologist, supervising cardiologist fellow, and other house staff assisting in the performance of procedures.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision may be exercised over assigned assistants.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Some experience in a catheterization type of laboratory
This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:* Graduation from an accredited program in Cardiac Invasive Cardiovascular Technology or Bachelor's degree in health, science, natural science, nursing, engineering or any primary science. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must be a self-motivated, highly dependable independent worker with the ability to efficiently and effectively multitask, prioritize and problem solve.
- PALS certification within 6 months of hire
- BLS certification is required.
- Understands and demonstrates the core concepts of Patient- and Family-Centered Care (PFCC), including Respect and Dignity, Information Sharing, Participation, and Collaboration.
- In addition, it's required that you have 1 of the 3 following qualifications:
- RCIS certification or must be eligible for RCIS exam as a graduate of an accredited program in Invasive Cardiovascular Technology with the RCIS exam being successfully completed within one year of hire.
- OR Candidate has obtained an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification for Radiography with at least 1-2 years of diagnostic general imaging experience and (ARRT) advanced certification for Cardiac Interventional (CI) is required within 2 years of hire
- OR Candidate is a graduate of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate academic program in health science (includes, but not limited to: cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, nursing or paramedic/EMT) with the RCIS exam being successfully completed within two years of hire.
- Some experience in critical care medicine.
- Certification or registration as a cardiac catheterization technologist.
- Familiarity and experience with congenital heart disease.
- Background as Interventional Radiology Technologist. Completion of an accredited formal training course with registration, certification, or licensure with the appropriate agency.
- Experience with interventional and diagnostic procedures while, sterile technique, and fluoroscopy equipment.
This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. On call is required, with a 60-minute response time.
