Career Advisor

The position facilitates and supports students’ pursuit of experiential education and professional opportunities and/or graduate schools. Assist with facilitating career development and services to undergraduate and graduate students, and alumni through appointments, drop-ins, express days, workshops, and other programming. Presents outreach programming and workshops to students in classroom settings, student organizations, residence halls, summer orientation, etc. Facilitates and presents career education seminars, which include but are not limited to Job Search Strategies in specific industry/field, Interview Skills and Techniques, Networking 101: Building Professional Connections, Leveraging LinkedIn for Career Success, Personal Branding: Creating an Impactful Online Presence, Exploring Careers in specific industry/field, Negotiating Job Offers and Salaries, Building a Portfolio for Creative Professions, Navigating the Graduate School Application Process, International Opportunities: Working or Studying Abroad, Entrepreneurship and Start-Up Basics, Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace, Transitioning from College to Career: Essential Skills for Success. Assist with the career management data system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for career education/preparation of a specific student cluster, which includes providing career advising and work preparation coaching. Facilitates the vocation/calling self-exploration process to guide students through the career development process. Facilitates interpretation of career assessments for students and alumni when needed. Facilitates students' preparation for experiential education programs and post-graduate pursuits (i.e., professional employment and graduate school). Conduct targeted outreach to graduating students. Provides career advising/coaching to alumni who return for career transition assistance. Provide specialized career advising tailored to the unique needs and goals of graduate students, including guidance on career transitions, industry-specific opportunities, and navigating the job market with advanced degrees. Conducts outreach to develop partnerships and cultivate internship and professional opportunities for students and alumni. Conducts development with the alumni community to identify mentors and industry experts to present at or participate in various career programs or networking events. Conducts site visits to internship employers to monitor partnerships and learning experiences of students and employer development visits to develop new relationships with employers. Develops career preparation curricula and career education materials/emails and facilitates/teaches a variety of seminars including resume writing, interviewing, networking tips, social media usage, and graduate school preparation. Conduct outreach to faculty to keep them and their students apprised of Career Center programs/activities. Make classroom presentations. Collaborates with faculty on various committees. Assists in fielding faculty questions about internships or other career-related questions. Assist with the plan develops, and coordinates all activities for career events (i.e., career fairs, programmatic theme months, networking events, and panel presentations). Develop promotional materials and distribute them via print and electronic media to university-community. Develop evaluation tools for all programs. Supports internal career teams and participates in university-wide committees. Conducts administrative tasks and prepares reports and professional correspondence. Locate additional web-based career preparation systems and contributes to updating content on the Career Center's Web site and social media sites supported by The Career Center when needed.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required; preferably in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Psychology, Human Resources, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred, particularly in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a closely related discipline that emphasizes student advising, support services, or educational development.

Desired Qualifications:

Understanding of the career management lifecycle and how it impacts career decision-making. Knowledge of/exposure to career assessments, such as the Strong Interest Inventory (SII) and Myers Briggs Type Indicator. Familiarity with counseling theory and principles. Ability to analyze career assessments. Develop/summarize evaluation tools. Develop and track student/alumni/employer activities following data management processes. Ability to plan and organize projects up to six months in advance. Ability to prioritize project work. Must be able to work in teams, as well as autonomously. Ability to lead campus-wide teams. Ability to manage multiple tasks and constituencies. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Publisher. Good understanding of the Internet and career databases. Knowledge of Microsoft Access a plus. Must have strong typing and telephone skills; understanding of office procedures and equipment is essential. Must be comfortable speaking in front of groups, as well as in one-on-one situations. Strong communication/platform skills are required. Must possess exceptional teaching and facilitation skills to lead career education seminars. Will serve as an ambassador for the University with parents, alumni and employers.

Salary Range:

$40,000 – $55,000
