Founded in 1887, Cornell Law School is a top-tier law school. We offer a 3-year JD program for about 200 students per class, a one-year LLM program for about 120 students from countries throughout the world, and a doctoral (JSD) program for about 2-3 new students per year. Cornell Law School has 41 tenured and tenure-track faculty, including 20 with chaired faculty positions; and 15 clinical professors in the legal research and writing program and in clinics at the local, national, and international level. The Opportunity

The Career Consultant provides specialized career development guidance, resources, and programming to students and alumni from Cornell Law School. This position serves as the main point of contact for the graduate legal programs and international JD cohort, and is responsible for the following:

  • Delivering comprehensive career advising to students and alumni interested in pursuing summer and post-graduate employment, both in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Advise students and recent graduates on securing positions, working with the Associate Dean and Career Development Office (CDO) colleagues to identify pathways, resources, and tailored employment options.
  • Cultivating relationships with employers, including establishing a pipeline of potential new employers in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Designing and implementing career-related panels and presentations, publications, and resources focused on educating and encouraging the exploration of legal opportunities.
  • Hosting recruiting events, including job fairs focused on international graduate students.
  • Developing electronic resources for the weekly Career Development Office eNewsletter, career guides, and website content.
  • Maintaining comprehensive recruitment policies and procedures.
  • Assisting with required regulatory and compliance efforts, including tracking employment statistics.
  • Networking with peer schools and colleagues nationwide on law school career development and recruitment initiatives.
  • Providing advice on internship and Optional Practical Training (OPT) opportunities in the U.S. and aboard.
  • Serving as the primary liaison to the NYSBA’s Committee on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar, and reporting relevant committee matters to the Law School’s senior leadership team and interested faculty.
  • Monitoring New York Bar admission requirements as they pertain to LLM students, and advising students on the requirements throughout their time at Cornell.
  • Collaborating with the Associate Dean and CDO colleagues to create an annual strategic plan, coordinate career-development efforts and programming, identify student support strategies, and develop initiatives and goals to provide a wide array of career opportunities to Law School students and alumni.

Occasional travel is required. The Career Consultant will also be expected to join/maintain membership in national and regional professional organizations.

What We Need

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience working in a legal setting as well as counseling or mentoring experience.
  • Excellent intercultural communications skills since this position works with lawyers from many countries with differing backgrounds and cultures.
  • Knowledge of international legal credentials and standards. Stellar interpersonal, organizational, oral presentation and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work well independently and to take initiative in developing and managing new programs for students.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it’s ok if you don’t.

  • Master’s, LLM, or JD degree.
  • International legal experience.
  • Prior law school career services or career counseling experience.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role remotely 3 days per week and onsite 2 days per week. The position is based in New York City, specifically, the First Amendment Clinic carrel at Cornell Tech (Roosevelt Island).  The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.
  • The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholding for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside of New York State.
