Job Summary
The Career Counselor is part of the Career Development Center team, educating and enabling students and recent alumni to achieve success with their career goals. Areas of responsibility include career advising, occasionally teach professional development courses, developing and delivering educational programming, and supporting campus-wide recruitment, engagement, and career-related events. The Career Counselor reports to the Director of the Career Development Center. This position is defined as an exempt position under FLSA regulations.
Specific Responsibilities
- Educate and assist students and recent alumni with career-related topics (choice of major, resumes, cover letters, job/internship searches, LinkedIn, graduate school application process, interviews, etc.) through individual appointments.
- Occasionally teach one Professional Development Course each year.
- Design and deliver programs/workshops on career-related topics.
- Collaborate with campus partners including academic departments, Athletics, Alumni Relations, and Student Life to provide programs and services related to career development.
- Participate in major events/programs including the Break Through conference and career treks, job and graduate school fairs, etc.
- Assist with campus-wide recruitment and retention programs including Admissions and Orientation programs and events.
- Collaborate on the enhancement and maintenance of career resources including career guides, internal website, etc.
- Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional organizations such as EACE and NACE.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Master's degree in higher education or a related field required.
Experience
Experience in career development for traditional-age college students, including workshop and program development, is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of career development theory and practice, career assessment resources, and career software systems. Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, alumni, staff, and families of prospective and current students. Skilled at written and verbal communication, including formal presentations to groups. Ability to manage time effectively while working independently and as part of a team. Able to work occasional nights and weekends.

This position requires a valid driver's license, and the ability to drive and qualify under the university's insurance carrier when driving a university and/or leased vehicle.
Physical Demands
Typical office environment: Position requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Position requires the ability to move about campus. Position requires the ability to talk and to hear instructions. Position requires manual dexterity and the ability to occasionally lift 10 pounds.
