Career Services Specialist
JOB SUMMARY
The Career Services Specialist provides career advising, career development and/or employment services to students, alumni, and other persons—including the development and delivery of career and placement decision making programs.
Identifies and explores career ideas, plans, and goals.
Presents career/employment programs and ideas to college and community groups.
The primary responsibility of the Specialist, Career Services is to establish trusting, collaborative relationships with COEs, students, staff, and faculty which are supportive of the goal of advancing students ability to transition to competitive employment.
This position will be instrumental in creating and delivering comprehensive student career development, career readiness, and student employment placement services in support of students educational, occupational, personal, and professional growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Interview all applicants to discuss career planning and/or employment opportunities, requirements, interests and procedures.
- Provide career and employment advising to students and alumni.
- Research and develop collaborations with employers and industries related to Centers of Excellence (COE).
- Assist students with building a Career Development Portfolio.
- Guide and monitor students creation of their Career Development Plan.
- Collaborate with Counselors and Academic Advisors to assure career plan aligns with academic plan.
- Provide career advising and enrichment to students and alumni to assure accurate students interpretation, application, and use of various career assessment tools in making a career decision.
- Identify the appropriate career assessment tool to accommodate student needs.
- Make appropriate referrals for students requiring Level 4 and Level 5 career assessments as well as students with unusual problems, disabilities or other restrictions.
- Orient a variety of users regarding purposes and goals of the College placement services.
- Prepare announcements regarding examinations, career opportunities and/or briefs; prepare advertising copy and correspondence for recruitment purposes.
- Conduct career planning and job readiness/placement classes, workshops and seminars; may participate in planning and development of classes, workshops or seminars.
- Prepare reports for local, state and federal offices dealing with statistical computation regarding oversupply and shortage of various employment categories.
- Coordinate experiential learning opportunities that may include Co-Op, internships, job shadowing, and externships.
- Assist with managing the College Online Career and Employment Center.
- Provide individualized support to assist students in securing and maintaining employment, including job coaching during the first month of a new job, or as requested by student.
- Track and maintain files, reports on employment, and departmental success through online career portal.
- Participate in the coordination of career and employment events, activities, and community affairs.
- Participate in annual professional development training as required.
- Work with various departments to create and disseminate notices of job fairs, job openings, and opportunities to participate in internships, co-operative training, job shadowing, and other experiential learning strategies.
- Perform other duties, tasks and assignments as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Bachelors degree in Social Science, Psychology, Social Work/Sociology, Education, Human Resources, Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Business or related field required
- Masters degree preferred
- Masters degree and 1 year of experience can be substituted for experience
- 3 years of work experience in Workforce Development, Career Services, Human Resources, College Relations, Marketing, job placement services, higher education or related field required
- An additional 1 year of case management experience or a Certification in Career Development is a plus
- An additional 1 year of case management experience or a Certification in Career Development is a plus
Licensing & Certification
- Valid Texas Driver License
- Certification in Career Development preferred

Working Conditions
General Office. Must be able to perform all job requirements with or without reasonable accommodations; remain in a stationary position during shift; move items weighing up to 25 pounds; position self to operate job equipment; apply established protocols in a timely manner. Must access, input and retrieve information from technology devices; communicate with others to accomplish job requirements. May be required to work after hours to include weekends and holidays.
