Carpenter Foreperson
The Carpenter Foreperson supports the University's carpentry shop by functioning as a working foreperson. This position is responsible for leading and performing duties for maintaining all building structures and related components. Services performed include all standard carpentry work including roughing, framing and finishing; cabinet making, and glazing. Perform journeyperson level maintenance and repairs in accordance with industry/trade practices. Performs assignments in response to requests for service, scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and unscheduled or special projects. Incumbents use all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade and observe all safety rules, regulations and precautions in performing duties. Must have strong leadership skills with a strong history of planning and managing work. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead, direct, motivate, and inspire building and structures staff.
- Plan and schedule work for the group ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.
- Lead and participate in the planning, laying out, construction, repair and assembly of temporary and permanent buildings, additions, partitions and wood structures and fixtures in accordance with blueprints, sketches and verbal instructions.
- Train and instruct new carpentry shop employees.
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with blueprints, specifications, instructions and applicable federal, state and local codes; direct any rework or modification.
- Conduct periodic inspections of University buildings and facilities to determine repair needs; establish and coordinate programs of preventive maintenance.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of 5 years in the carpentry trade
- Minimum of 5 years' experience of continual carpentry shop leadership
- Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the carpentry trade
- Must be proficient with computers for generating spreadsheets, parts ordering, reading blueprints, and other related tasks
- Must have experience with meeting vendors and contractors for scoping out work, requesting proposals and scheduling the work
- Must have experience working with vendors on quoting materials and supplies needed for planning work
- Must have experience with CMMS programs for tracking work order completion, running reports for aging work orders and working with the supervisor on planning work order assignments for the shop
