CERC in Arctic Climate Action and Sustainability
The University of Manitoba (UM) invites applications to the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program for more details for a CERC in Arctic Climate Action and Sustainability, awarded at $500,000 or $1,000,000 per year, for a total of $4,000,000 or $8,000,000 over eight years.
The CERC program aims to attract the world’s top researchers to lead breakthroughs in Canada’s Science, Technology and Innovation priority areas. This Chair will build on UM’s success in Arctic climate and marine sciences and address the need to accelerate climate action and sustainability, supporting Arctic (including sub-Arctic) communities in pursuing resilient, sustainable economies and healthy ecosystems amid climate change.
Applicants must be world-leading researchers in fields such as Arctic climatology, hydrology, ecosystem health, or related Earth and environmental sciences, with a proven record of leadership in interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and action-oriented research. They must contribute to addressing environmental injustice and governance challenges related to climate change. Eligible applicants are full professors or associate professors promotable to full professor within one or two years, or equivalents from outside academia.
The program emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Applications must demonstrate high EDI standards.
The Chair will be hosted in UM’s Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources in Winnipeg, on the original lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and the national homeland of the Red River Métis. It will collaborate with existing research excellence and initiatives at UM.
Interested applicants should submit: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a two-page research program statement, a one-page EDI statement, and references to the contact person.
UM acknowledges the impact of career interruptions and is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion for systemically marginalized groups.
Applications will be reviewed by a CERC Selection Committee, with selection based on research merit, quality of the research program, and potential contributions to the research ecosystem.
Submit applications to the specified contact. Posting date: June 18, 2025. Review begins September 8, 2025.
