Overview:
UAB Heersink School of Medicine is seeking applications for Chair, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics. The Chair reports to and works closely with the Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean of the School of Medicine and Senior Vice Dean of the School of Medicine to fulfill both UAB's and the department's commitment to carrying out cutting-edge basic and translational research while providing rigorous, high-quality education to the scientists of tomorrow.
Required/Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./ Ph.D.
- Academic rank of Associate or Full Professor.
- Accomplished leader in the field of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics ranging from enzymology, metabolism, gene expression, protein structure/function, virology, cell differentiation, and molecular pathogenesis, academic scholarship, education and administration.
- Strong track record of academic leadership in a comprehensive public urban research university with an academic medical center.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with leaders of various backgrounds and interests.
- Competency navigating interactions with educational, research and service missions of a complex academic medical center department.
- Proven capabilities in financial stewardship, budget management and resource allocation.
- Solid vision for building a top-ranked Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics.

Responsibilities:
The Chair of the Department of Biochemistry will support the School's mission and vision through the creation of novel strategies to sustain and grow the Department and continue to enhance the mission areas of research and education. S/he will assess gaps within those mission areas and identify future opportunities and needs. Provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the Department, including the positive representation of the Department within the UAB enterprise, creating collaboration opportunities and working in support of institutional goals.
The UAB Heersink SOM's main campus is in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2023, UAB had more than 1,700 full-time faculty and almost 2,000 medical and graduate students, and the HSOM ranked 27th nationally in NIH research funding (12th among public institutions) in the US.
