Teaching - 10%

The incumbent will be expected to participate as a preceptor in the Core Clerkship in Surgery and the clinical elective for medical students enrolled at The Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. They will also be expected to participate in the teaching programs of the Department of Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, which includes residents in General Surgery and fellows, as well as interdisciplinary teaching programs with other Divisions and Departments within the hospital and the medical school. Participation would include curriculum development, teaching, mentoring and evaluation of students and trainees.

Research - 20%

Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in pursuing basic, translational, or clinical research programs pertaining to the field of breast surgery. The incumbent will be expected to establish, coordinate, and integrate national, regional, and institutional research protocols Rhode Island Hospital and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. They will also be expected to act as the Institution’s Principal Investigator or mentor for collaborative and multicenter studies and research networks. Special consideration will be given to individuals who have successfully pursued extramurally funded basic or translational science research in relevant fields of surgery and medicine. It is expected that the incumbent will dedicate time to scholarly activity/productivity and research, and space will be provided.

Patient Care - 50%

The incumbent will oversee the administration and participate in the clinical aspects of the section, including the inpatient service and the outpatient clinics as well as sharing and overseeing call coverage and consultative services.

Service/Administrative Responsibilities - 20%

The incumbent will be expected to maintain a positive working relationship in all activities of the Section of Breast Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology within the Department of Surgery and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and with the Brown Health Cancer Institute. Responsibilities include leading the section, mentoring diverse stakeholders, supporting an inclusive environment for faculty, trainees, and staff, and leading research with potential to mitigate care disparities. This includes attending Faculty and Staff meetings, serving on Medical School, Hospital, and Department committees, and working with faculty and the Chair of Surgery of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University to facilitate the achievements of the department and the section.

Requirements

Minimum requirements include board certification in general surgery and/or surgical oncology, plus completion of a breast fellowship. The successful applicant has a national reputation and a clinical strength in breast surgery. The applicant should have a strong record in education and peer reviewed publication with proven experience in administration and leadership. The applicant must meet the requirements to be eligible for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor of surgery in the Research Scholar or Teaching Scholar tracks at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University to include an established record of scholarly achievements and publications with a national or international reputation. Highly desirable attributes include involvement in national or international committees and relevant professional societies, and a track record of an administrative role at a major medical institution. A strong research track record is preferred.
