Job Summary:

The Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a 100%-time Saxophone Teaching Faculty. This position is a one-year, non-tenure track temporary position with the possibility of a one-year renewal, or it may become a permanent position based on funding and departmental need. This appointment will begin in the fall semester of 2026, with a start date of August 17, 2026.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience of successful teaching at the advanced level and significant experience in the field of saxophone performance. We seek a colleague who will join a nationally renowned faculty and staff and contribute to our program through teaching courses that develop and support a wide range of musical endeavors.

The instructor in this position will be expected to perform the following duties:

• Instruction:
  • Teach students in the classical saxophone studio, which will include Undergraduates, Masters and Doctoral students dissertators.
  • Other duties as assigned, which may include chamber ensembles, quartets, reed quintet, new music ensemble, and saxophone ensemble
  • Teach a weekly studio class
  • Teach the saxophone portion of the Woodwind Fundamentals course for Music Education majors.
  • Teach one saxophone ensemble per semester
  • Hold regular office hours
• Department/Area Responsibilities:
  • Attend all departmental and area meetings as required
  • Recruit for and maintain enrollment of students for the classical saxophone studio
  • Participate in undergraduate juries for the woodwind area at the end of each semester
  • Attend graduate and undergraduate audition days
  • Participate in ensemble placement auditions
  • Supervise teaching assistants

Key Job Responsibilities:

• Supervises the day to day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
• Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
• Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
• Assists in developing techniques and/or model programs for carrying out instructional goals in disciplinary area and may help identify ways in which new techniques could be of assistance
• Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
• Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy

Compensation:

The expected salary for this position is $57,000 (9-month) for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will be based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

• Strong commitment to teaching excellence at undergraduate, master's, doctoral and dissertator levels
• One year of instructional experience at a college or university
• An enthusiasm for innovative, collaborative learning environments
• Evidence of an emerging national performance career
• Experience recruiting for a saxophone studio at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3 years of instructional experience at a college or university
• Evidence of an established national/international performance career
• Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate with all persons with a wide range of abilities and backgrounds. This includes but is not limited to the general public, students, staff, and collaborating partner

Master’s Degree required
