CNRE Assistant Director
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has established the Center for Naval Research & Education (CNRE) at the University of Michigan. CNRE addresses fundamental science and technology challenges in naval applications while training future generations. It involves talented, multi-disciplinary researchers working on areas such as bio-fluid interactions, wave energy, advanced materials, electromagnetics, complex hydrodynamics, hydroacoustics, data assimilation, and multi-disciplinary optimization.
The Assistant Program Manager will report to Krishnan Mahesh, overseeing daily operations including human resources, financial management, staff management, budget oversight, and development. This is a 5-year term-limited, grant-funded position with renewal option in 2029.
Administration & Operations
- Manage daily operations of CNRE, focusing on human resources and financial management.
- Represent CNRE in business matters.
- Create and maintain databases for annual reports and program reviews.
- Assist in recruitment strategy for undergraduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
Financial Management
- Oversee financial operations including budgeting, monitoring, expenditure tracking, and forecasting.
- Prepare annual financial reports.
- Provide input for grant and contract proposals.
- Process travel arrangements and expense reimbursements.
Human Resources
- Coordinate hiring processes, including recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and training for Postdoctoral Research Fellows, Graduate Student Research Assistants, and temporary student workers.
- Support employee relations by addressing complaints and grievances.
Event Planning
- Lead planning, organization, and execution of CNRE-hosted events such as seminars, workshops, conferences, and social gatherings.
- Provide logistical and administrative support.
Marketing & Communications
- Develop and maintain CNRE's communication strategies, including website content, newsletters, and social media.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in business, human resources, accounting, or related field; excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; experience with HR, finance, and budget policies; attention to detail and organizational skills. Preferred: Knowledge of University of Michigan policies.
