Job Description
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks candidates for a full-time, non-tenure-track position at the anticipated rank of Assistant Professor. We seek applicants who demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence in a range of courses taken by first-year students including majors and nonmajors. Therefore, a successful applicant will primarily teach General Chemistry and/or Introductory Chemistry lectures and, with approval from the chair, may also contribute to upper division courses. Faculty in these positions frequently collaborate with multiple units across campus including Nursing, Mathematics, Medicine, and Biology. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) treasures our student body and is committed to their success. We seek applicants who have previously demonstrated a commitment to teaching excellence in chemistry and have a strong interest in chemical pedagogy. Candidates with demonstrated teaching expertise in large classroom (100+ students) environments are especially encouraged to apply.
This position is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure earning, career-track appointment. Duties include:
- Teaching up to three lecture sections of first-year chemistry per semester and ensuring uniform curricular coverage.
- Collaborating with general chemistry faculty to ensure a comprehensive undergraduate first-year chemistry experience is offered.
- Developing course materials as it pertains to instruction, including materials to facilitate student learning.
- Developing curricula, when needed, using chemical education best practices.
- Serving on department committees including those related to undergraduate education.
- Building and maintaining the relevant online course management pages (lecture and recitation where required) with respect to course material, assignments, assessments, and grades.

Required Qualifications: Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry with a strong background in chemical education or a closely related discipline.
