COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES TENURE-TRACK DIVERSITY CLUSTER HIRES
In the spirit of our commitment to academic excellence, diversity, equity and inclusion, and the liberal arts tradition, the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Diego will be hiring faculty in three thematic clusters through a multi-year hiring strategy. These clusters are designed to attract a diverse set of scientists, artists, humanists, social scientists, and mathematicians who will participate in campus and community collaborations with interdisciplinary, pedagogical, and community engagement approaches related to one of these three clusters:
- Climate Change & Environmental Justice
- Technology & the Human Experience
- Borders & Social Justice
USD's Horizon Project includes initiatives to increase the diversity of faculty across all disciplines over the next five years. Each of these clusters will invite and include teacher-scholars who help us build on USD's commitment to support faculty who are underrepresented in their discipline and in the academy. Qualified candidates who are dedicated to empowering students from underserved communities through their teaching, research, creative and pedagogical scholarship, community engagement, service and/or mentoring are strongly encouraged to apply. Scholars of discovery, integration, engagement, and pedagogy are all important to the USD community.
Climate Change & Environmental Justice: Given the array of disciplinary perspectives from which climate change and environmental justice may be approached, candidates with interest and/or expertise in fostering opportunities to engage with questions about the impact of the changing climate on humanity, the environment, public policy and the arts. Successful applicants will teach classes within their disciplinary expertise. Details related to department curricular needs are found in the department specific information linked below.
Technology & the Human Experience: The College is seeking applicants with a promising program of research in the study of Technology and the Human Experience to prepare students to design, create, regulate and implement accessible and bias-free technologies for a diverse world. Successful applicants will teach classes within their disciplinary expertise. Details related to department curricular needs are found in the department specific information linked below.
Borders & Social Justice: In the spirit of recognizing borders as social, political, cultural and physical constructs that act as artificial or natural boundaries within and beyond our imagination, the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking applicants with expertise in challenging and contesting the concept of borders. Successful applicants will teach classes within their disciplinary expertise. Details related to department curricular needs are found in the department specific information linked below.
Departments Participating in the Interdisciplinary Clusters:
We endeavor to assemble a cohort of teacher-scholars who will offer a strong contribution to the diversity and excellence of USD through teaching, scholarship, service and collaboration. Based on teaching and research expertise, candidates will apply to one of the listed departments. As a member of a cluster, faculty will be reviewed through the rank and tenure process within their academic department and will be encouraged to participate in interdisciplinary collaborations facilitated by the cluster thematic programming. The College will support interdisciplinary opportunities through professional development, teaching reassigned times, writing retreats, casual lunches, and teaching and research grant opportunities linked to the cluster. It is anticipated that faculty members will work within one of these interdisciplinary clusters to build opportunities for faculty/student collaboration and promote interdisciplinary strengths within the undergraduate core curriculum. A college-wide mentoring program will support new faculty throughout the tenure process.
