About the Position and the Physics Department at Normandale
The members of the Physics Department are committed to providing a solid foundation in physics to students of all backgrounds. We value a diversity of approaches and background in our faculty members. We believe in a rigorous quality education that provides learning opportunities on multiple levels. Our curriculum offers a range of entry and intermediate level courses that enhance the preparation for students working toward the Physics Associate of Arts Emphasis degree or another degree program at Normandale, as well as for students transferring to four-year institutions, whether or not they major in Physics. The Physics Department encourages a participatory and democratic faculty culture and affirms the engaged role our faculty have played in service to the college.
Normandale Community College is striving to achieve racial equity in educational outcomes. Those hired into these positions will be expected to advance this goal through culturally responsive teaching, identifying barriers to success for students of color, and proposing effective solutions to eliminate those barriers. Candidates hired who do not have a background in culturally responsive teaching will be expected to complete the College’s training.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Teach in an inclusive and culturally responsive manner for our entire student body, in particular for students of color, first-generation students, and Pell eligible students.
- Teach in a way that engages students, and fosters curiosity and motivation.
- Teach a broad spectrum of Physics courses, including laboratory, in day, evening, and alternate schedule formats utilizing traditional and alternative delivery formats.
- Be committed to the success and retention of underrepresented students
- Provide quality instruction and services to students of diverse ages and backgrounds.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and experience in assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Develop and improve instructional methods, materials, and resources.
- Participate in the development and improvement of curricula and courses
- Participate in faculty and department meetings and College-wide committees
- Participate in other College related programs and activities
- Maintain ongoing professional development activities in Physics and culturally responsive pedagogy
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree with a major in Physics; or Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester credits (27 graduate quarter credits) in Physics.

Official academic transcripts may be requested from those invited for an interview. Those who are invited to interview will be required to provide a teaching demonstration as part of the interview.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. degree in Physics.
- Experience serving diverse and underserved populations
- Experience teaching undergraduates in a community college setting
- Experience as a primary instructor teaching college or university-level physics, including laboratory
- Experience in teaching physics courses to non-majors
- Experience in online learning and in course delivery using web-based course management systems such as D2L
- Experience in innovative teaching and learning approaches
- Experience in assessment of student learning outcomes
- Experience providing specific strategies to create a sense of belonging within the classroom
- Experience teaching courses with innovative teaching practices to support the success and retention of underrepresented students, including students of color, first-generation students, and Pell-eligible students
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Evidence of continuous professional development related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Demonstrated commitment to participating in campus activities and professional development
