Community Mapper (Fixed Term, Full-time or Part-time)

The Department of Architecture, with the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art are seeking up to three full-time-equivalent highly motivated Community Mappers to work off-site from the community space of our partner the Cambridge Room to support the implementation of the Public Map Platform Phase 2.

This is an exciting and intense two-year participatory research project working with local communities to develop digital community made maps of the region that will help foster sustainable behaviours. Our focus is on empowering children and young people to have a voice in planning. The roles are open to those wishing to job-share.

The community mappers will work in schools, leisure centres and events across Cambridgeshire helping children and young people create data for our community made maps. While the focus is on working with children and young people, mapping workshops will be available to all age groups. The maps are digital, based on Open Street Map and You Map. Sometimes hand-made maps will be made with the data being transferred into digital formats.

The mappers will also act as ambassadors for the project making presentations to community groups and others about its progress.

There will be full training given in the mapping software and may be opportunities to travel to Wales to work with the team on Anglesey.

A typical day could include:

  • Catching up with the Outreach Project Coordinator, either in person or online
  • Working with colleagues to plan and deliver mapping 'lessons' in schools
  • Showing young people how to use mapping software and environmental monitoring kits
  • Collecting feedback on the mapping process and feeding the data back to the project team in line with project procedures
  • Representing the Public Map team at conferences
  • Working within schools to explain to children, young people and their families how they can effect change in their own community

This is a dynamic and fast-paced project and there is unlikely to be a typical day in role, although there are some examples of tasks above. This role will offer a variety of tasks and activities and would suit someone who enjoys creativity and learning.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a pro-active approach will ensure that the diverse workload is enjoyable and fulfilling. It is also important that the mappers are familiar with the local area and feel passionately about improving the environment of Cambridge. Further information is available here.

An enhanced DBS check will be completed as part of the induction process and must be obtained.

The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2028 in the first instance.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Zara Kuckelhaus, Business and Operations Manager, at faculty-hr@aha.cam.ac.uk. For queries about the application process, please contact the School's HR team at sahhr@admin.cam.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is midnight (GMT) on Wednesday 7 January 2026. Interviews of shortlisted candidates are expected to take place on Friday 16 January 2026, subject to change.
