Community Service and Civic Impact Specialist (Student Life Specialist) - Macaulay Honors College
POSITION DETAILS
Since 1847, The City University of New York has provided a path to success for generations of New Yorkers. In this rich tradition, Macaulay Honors College was established in 2001 as a consortial college linked with eight CUNY partners- Baruch College, Brooklyn College, City College of New York, College of Staten Island, Hunter College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Lehman College, and Queens College-to integrate the vast resources of the City University with New York’s cultural, scientific, and business communities. As a top Honors college in the nation, Macaulay offers a first-rate experiential education to high achieving students- especially those who are first generation and low income-along with access to the immersive opportunities that help them achieve big, bold dreams. Under the leadership of its new Dean, Dr. Dara N. Byrne, Macaulay Honors College is on a distinct mission to reimagine equity, excellence, and access.
Reporting to the Director of Student Development, the Community Service and Civic Impact Specialist plays a critical role in advancing the college’s commitment to meaningful, equity-centered community engagement. This position supports the design and implementation of high-impact service and civic learning opportunities that leverage New York City as a living laboratory, connect students to community partners across the five boroughs, and promote sustained engagement beyond one-time volunteerism.
Every Macaulay student completes a required community service experience, making civic engagement a universal feature of the Macaulay education. This position is designed to connect student community service to real civic challenges facing New York City, including housing access, climate resilience, food equity, and digital inclusion. Through these pathways, students will develop a deeper understanding of public issues, build sustained relationships with community and city partners, and gain the confidence and capacity to participate meaningfully in the civic life of the city.
Under the direction of the Director of Student Development and working collaboratively with campus-based staff, faculty, and external partners, the position helps ensure consistency, quality, and shared standards for community service initiatives across the consortium, while also supporting campus-specific needs. The role contributes to institutional priorities related to student development, belonging, leadership preparation, and public impact, and supports Macaulay’s broader goals around assessment and public reporting.
This position requires a high degree of coordination, relationship-building, and operational judgment, and is well-suited to a professional who is comfortable working across organizational boundaries in a complex, multi-campus environment.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Under the direction of the Director of Student Development, develop and implement community service and civic engagement programming, services, and learning opportunities that promote students’ personal, civic, and leadership development across a diverse student population.
- Administer assigned community service and civic engagement initiatives, including program planning, coordination, assessment, budget monitoring, and preparation of reports and documentation.
- Coordinate and support partnerships with nonprofit, government, and community-based organizations, ensuring meaningful, reciprocal service opportunities aligned with institutional goals and community needs.
- Serve as a resource and advocate for students and student groups engaged in community service and civic initiatives, providing consultation, guidance, and problem-solving support.
- Supervise, train, and support student employees and/or paraprofessional staff involved in community service and civic engagement programs, as assigned.
- Collaborate with campus and consortial partners to align community service standards and practices while supporting campus-specific implementation.
- Research and remain current on trends, issues, and best practices in community engagement, civic learning, and student development that impact student experiences and program design.
- Develop workshops, training materials, and informational resources to support community service and civic engagement programs, including orientation and reflection activities.
- Manage program-related online content, including web pages, forms, and digital resources that support student participation and partner engagement.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies and risk management requirements related to off-campus activities, community partnerships, and student participation.
Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office.
