Campus Location: NSCC Lynn & UMass Amherst
Work Schedule:
- July 1: Staff Training
- July 2 - July 16: Day Program, 8am-4pm
- July 18 - August 8: Residential Program, UMass Amherst
- August 10: NSCC: Wrapping up paperwork and program materials
SALARY: Total earnings for this position is $3080 at $20 per hour plus room and board and transportation to/from during the residential portion of the program.
At this time, the College is not providing sponsorships for Visas.
ABOUT TRIO UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
The North Shore Community College (NSCC) TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program is a federally funded program for low-income, first-generation, and/or academically at-risk high school students. The primary mission is to increase the rate at which participants complete their secondary school education, and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. The UB program provides academic, co- and extracurricular activities during the academic year and the summer, including instruction, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, health and fitness activities, educational workshops, and service activities.
ABOUT UB SUMMER ACADEMY
The UB Summer Academy is a six-week program that simulates commuter and residential college experiences. The Summer Academy serves approximately 40 students from the Lynn Public Schools. This year's Summer Academy includes a four-week, day program at North Shore Community College's Lynn Campus and a two- week residential program at UMass Amherst. The program runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM during the non-residential component and Sunday evening through Saturday afternoon during the residential component. The overarching theme for this year's Summer Academy is, Starfleet Academy.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The two Community Team Leaders assist the full-time staff with the general operation of the program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General
- Attend and participate in staff training, daily/weekly team meetings, and end-of-program activities
- Build and maintain a positive, supportive, productive, and safe environment for both students and staff
- Support program logistics, including opening or closing the program each day, tracking and monitoring daily attendance and departure of program participants; monitoring activities, assisting students getting to/from class (sending links), facilitating daily announcements; making sure program spaces and supplies are organized
- Assist the Program Coordinator with the coordination and facilitation of workshops; plan and lead virtual activities
- Assist the Academic Coordinator by serving as the tutor for assigned classes; work closely with the instructors to provide interventions and support; provide academic support during office hours
- Monitor student behavior for compliance with Upward Bound and college/university policies/procedures/regulations; respond positively and proactively to student issues as they arise, including documenting and enforcing and responding to disciplinary situations
- Individually mentor and conduct weekly student group meetings for an assigned group of students
- Complete activity and student evaluations, document incidents, and maintain files
- Serve as a role model for students and Learning Leaders during activities
- Assist the full-time staff with coordinating the work of the Learning Leaders, including scheduling, activity planning, monitoring of UB and College policies
- Assist with chaperoning field trips and activities as needed
- Appropriately represent NSCC and UB at all events
- Other duties as assigned
Residential Component
- Shared responsibility for dormitory supervision of project participants
- Assist with dining hall, floor duty, bell-desk coverage, and monitoring residence hall floors
- Assist with residence hall set up and clean-up during and beginning and the end of the program.
Job Requirements:
- Completion of at least two years of college and current enrollment in an undergraduate program, or an undergraduate degree
- Attention to detail, organized, effective communication skills, demonstrate a professional attitude and ability to work well under pressure
- Demonstrated sensitivity towards and passion and commitment to working with students and staff of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, different levels of academic preparation, or/and varying physical and learning abilities; prior experience, preferred
- At least one year of residential or related overnight supervisory experience, preferred
- Previous mentoring and/or tutoring experience, preferred
- Demonstrated ability to be punctual and dependable, preferred
- Ability to contribute to a positive, team-oriented environment, preferred
- Availability to complete mandatory staff training before the start of the summer component
- Bi-lingual (Spanish, French, Khmer) preferred
- Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a national background check as a condition of employment
