Computer System Tutor (College Assistant) - Percy Ellis Sutton SEEK Program
GENERAL DUTIES
- Under supervision, performs miscellaneous clerical, administrative, research or other work related to the operation of a College or other unit where such work is required on a part-time basis or for a period of limited duration.
- There is one Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as needed.
- Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year.
- Performs routine clerical work; may answer and attend to telephone calls; maintain records, operate office machines (such as copier), sort and distribute mail, issue keys and identity cards, act as messenger, and perform related tasks as required.
- Types letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials.
- Acts as cashier.
- Assists in statistical or research activities. May collect and compile data, code data for computer entry, perform data entry, and run computer reports.
- Performs clerical library work, such as sorting and shelving books, performing data entry into library systems, or binding books and periodicals.
- Assists in instructional programs, including tutoring and assisting students in areas such as reading and mathematics. May assist in speech and hearing therapy, provide musical accompaniment, and/or distribute and collect physical education equipment.
- Enters and maintains departmental records such as inventory control records, rosters, directories, and schedules.
- May operate computers, computer software, and other electronic equipment in performing assigned tasks.

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is a comprehensive college offering associate and bachelor’s degree programs in downtown Brooklyn. The Percy Ellis Sutton Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) program at City Tech invites applications for a part-time position of Computer System Tutor (College Assistant).
Reporting to the SEEK Academic Program Manager, the Computer System Tutor (College Assistant) will:
- Tutor computer systems subjects including Introduction to Computer Systems; Problem Solving with Computer Programming; Fundamentals of Programming, Networking Database and Operation Systems; Various Programming Languages.
- Provide in-person individual or small group tutoring on campus.
- Participate in staff meetings and ongoing professional development activities.
- Respond to e-mail and phone correspondence from SEEK Academic Program Manager.
- Maintain complete and accurate records via database.
- Refer students to other program services such as Academic Coaching and/or Counseling as needed.
All positions are subject to budget availability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher in related coursework, and a "B" or better in Computer Systems related courses.
- Working knowledge of networking basics, program design, and SQL.
- Prior experience tutoring or teaching college students is not required, but highly desirable.
- Availability to work 2 days per week in person.
- Ability to tutor Computer Systems, Computer Programming, Networking Database and Operation Systems, and various programming languages.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
- Knowledge of contemporary academic technology resources for use with college students.
- A basic understanding of educational opportunity programs.
- Demonstrated commitment to support the academic success of a diverse student body.
