As the Controller, you will play a pivotal role in managing the Accounting Department, including general accounting, accounts payable, tax reporting, compliance, and financial reporting. You will ensure the successful execution of the College’s audits, tax filings, and compliance reporting, providing expert guidance and support to various departments. Your leadership will be essential in fostering a culture of service and teamwork, reflecting Grinnell College’s mission and vision.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage all aspects of the Accounting Department.
- Oversee audits, including the college audit, A-133, wrap plan, and 403(b).
- Collaborate with cross-departmental committees and provide professional services across the College.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of all tax and compliance filings (e.g., 990, state solicitation filings, unclaimed property filings, IPEDS, NCAA EZ-Audit).
- Complete various higher education required survey responses including EADA and IPEDS.
- Lead and inspire the accounting team, cultivating a collaborative and service-oriented environment.
- Support the Associate Vice-President of Finance as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Accounting, Finance or related field
- 7+ years of experience in accounting, with demonstrated supervisory experience.
- High standards of confidentiality, accuracy, and integrity.
- Exceptional problem-solving and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and positively with diverse constituencies.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with strong attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Commitment to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Proven ability to lead and prioritize effectively within a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Accounting Degree strongly preferred
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation
- Higher education experience
