Core Infrastructure Engineer
Position Purpose:
University Technology Services, the central IT organization of Oakland University, is seeking a Core Services Engineer to perform technology tasks. The Core Services Engineer is responsible for the administration, maintenance, and optimization of the organization's core infrastructure and collaboration platforms—with a primary focus on Google Workspace and supporting responsibilities for Microsoft 365 and cloud identity services – Microsoft Entra ID. This position ensures secure, reliable, and efficient delivery of essential IT services while driving automation, standardization, and continuous improvement. The Core Services Engineer collaborates across IT teams to enhance productivity, streamline operations, and ensure seamless integration between Google and Microsoft ecosystems. The role requires a deep understanding of email services, including troubleshooting, configuration, and optimization to support institutional communication needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary administrator and subject matter expert for Google Workspace, including Gmail, Drive, Shared Drives, Groups, and collaboration services, ensuring secure, reliable, and high-performing operations.
- Administer and maintain enterprise email services, including configuration, routing, security controls, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
- Support and maintain core services operating within cloud and hosted environments, ensuring reliability, security, and alignment with institutional standards.
- Ensure the reliability, security, and performance of core collaboration and infrastructure services.
- Perform routine system maintenance, including patching, updates, upgrades, and service monitoring to maintain system integrity and compliance.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts, configuration standards, and operational documentation to improve efficiency and service consistency.
- Lead or support system migrations, platform integrations, and service improvement initiatives related to collaboration and enterprise systems.
- Participate in enterprise patch management and coordinate maintenance communications to minimize service disruption.
- Collaborate with IT leadership and cross-functional teams to align core services with institutional needs and service standards.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of four (4) years of experience in systems administration, collaboration platforms, or infrastructure engineering.
- Advanced administration and troubleshooting experience with Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Groups), including configuration, security, and performance optimization.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms and services, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft 365.
- Experience supporting enterprise email systems, including routing, security, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with identity and access management tools (Microsoft Entra ID, MFA, SSO, conditional access).
- Scripting and automation experience.
- Knowledge of patch management, system updates, and monitoring of core infrastructure services.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals, DNS, certificates, and cloud security best practices.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both independently and collaboratively.
- Willingness to work scheduled maintenance windows, including occasional overnight hours.
- Must reside in the state of Michigan and be able to report to campus within 1–1.5 hours if required.
- Ability to travel occasionally for professional development or training.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Experience supporting IT services in higher education or other public sector organizations.
- Experience managing large-scale or multi-domain enterprise environments.
- Experience with governance, compliance, or data protection frameworks in regulated environments.
- Experience leading technical projects or cross-functional initiatives.
- Experience with virtualization and container solutions (e.g., VMware, Kubernetes, Docker).
- Industry certifications relevant to enterprise systems, identity management, or collaboration platforms.
