The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a Counselor (DSPS)/Instructor (Learning Disabilities Specialist) in support of Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS) and the Learning Disability Assessment Program for Las Positas College in Livermore, California.
This position reports directly to the Dean of Counseling and Student Support.
Representative Duties
The Counselor/Instructor shall:
- Provide disability-specific counseling related to academic, personal, and career goals, disability management, and educational planning.
- Evaluate disability documentation; identify disability-related functional limitations; and determine appropriate and reasonable accommodations through an interactive process consistent with ADA, Section 504, and Title 5 regulations.
- Prepare, administer, and interpret standardized assessment instruments and review medical, psychological, and educational documentation to determine students eligibility for Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS), including learning disability eligibility where appropriate.
- Develop, implement, review, and monitor Student Academic Accommodation Plans, Short-term Education Plans, and Comprehensive Education Plans; evaluate student progress toward educational goals.
- Serve as an advocate for students with disabilities by working collaboratively with faculty, counselors, and college personnel to ensure equal access to the colleges programs and services.
- Facilitate and coordinate the provision of academic accommodations and services, including but not limited to note-taking, assistive technology, test-taking accommodations, and related support services.
- Facilitate student completion of Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) requirements, including orientation, assessment, counseling, and follow-up.
- Maintain confidential student records and documentation in compliance with Title 5, FERPA, and DSPS reporting requirements.
- Participate in orientation, transition, and outreach activities for students matriculating from high school and community agencies.
- Provide consultation, training, and support to faculty and staff regarding disability-related issues, accommodations, and instructional strategies.
- Teach Learning Skills courses as assigned; participate in course and curriculum development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, committees, research, professional development, and other faculty responsibilities.
- Evidence of sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean or Vice President of Student Services.
Minimum Education and Experience
Masters degree in rehabilitation counseling
OR
Masters degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelors degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
(A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or
(B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.
AND
Masters degree in learning disabilities, special education, education, psychology, speech language pathology, communication disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling
AND
15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities, to include, adult cognitive and achievement assessment or the equivalent

Minimum Qualifications
Evidence of sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
Desirable Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience teaching students with learning disabilities and other disabilities;
- Training or experience in the implementation of ADA, ADAA, Section 504 requirements.
- Formal training and practical experience in the administration, scoring and interpretation of cognitive (WAIS and WJ) and achievement (WJ and WIAT) assessment instruments.
- Significant experience working with people with severe, persistent psychological disabilities.
Job Work Schedule
The positions are full-time, 11 month, tenure track, beginning Fall 2026. Employment will begin on or about August 20, 2026.
