Position Overview: The BYU School of Medicine invites applications for a full-time position as Course Director for Organ System 1 - Skin and Musculoskeletal. This foundational Phase 1 course introduces students to the structural and functional organization of the integumentary and musculoskeletal systems, including mechanisms of injury, pain, repair, and dysfunction.

The Course Director will lead the design, delivery, and integration of this interdisciplinary course, collaborating with faculty in anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, radiology, and clinical sciences. The ideal candidate is a basic scientist with a background in musculoskeletal anatomy and a strong record of teaching medical students, with a demonstrated interest in student-centered, case-based, and clinically integrated instruction.

Required Degree: PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, or a related biomedical science. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong record of teaching musculoskeletal anatomy in undergraduate medical education (UME) settings
  • Understanding of structure-function relationships, injury mechanisms, and common musculoskeletal pathologies
  • Experience using student-centered and active learning methodologies (e.g., team-based learning, flipped classroom, clinical cases)
  • Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in biomechanics, kinesiology, physical medicine, or orthopedics
  • Clinical experience or translational knowledge of musculoskeletal injury and repair
  • Demonstrated scholarship in medical education or musculoskeletal science
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary curriculum integration and course coordination
  • Familiarity with medical education technology (e.g., ultrasound, radiologic imaging, digital dissection tools)

Duties/Expectations:

Teaching and Instruction:

  • Teach foundational concepts in musculoskeletal anatomy and skin/soft tissue physiology using a variety of instructional methods
  • Facilitate large and small group learning experiences, including labs, dissection/prosection, and integrated imaging
  • Use clinical cases and applied anatomy to enhance student understanding of structure and function
  • Provide mentoring and academic support to medical students

Administrative Leadership:

  • Oversee course planning, session sequencing, and instructional alignment with school-wide curricular goals
  • Coordinate with faculty content experts and clinicians to ensure high-quality delivery of integrated topics
  • Manage course logistics, calendars, materials, assessments, and quality improvement processes in collaboration with the Office of Medical Education

Scholarship and Educational Innovation:

  • Contribute to educational scholarship related to musculoskeletal science or curriculum development
  • Present at professional meetings and publish in peer-reviewed venues
  • Innovate teaching practices using evidence-based methods and relevant technologies

Service and Outreach:

  • Serve on curriculum committees and contribute to departmental and institutional initiatives
  • Engage in faculty development activities and foster collaboration across disciplines
  • Represent the course and school in student and community engagement efforts
