FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.

Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. Persons employed in the title of CUNY Start Instructor shall be assigned to teach and perform related functions as part of the CUNY Start program. The CUNY Start Instructors are full-time, non-tenure track positions.

LaGuardia Community College is seeking to fill the position of CUNY Start English Instructor.

CUNY Start at LaGuardia is part of an Office of the Academic Affairs’ University-wide program that operates and partners with seven other CUNY campuses. This intensive pre-matriculation program is designed to support CUNY degree-seeking students with significant academic needs achieve college-level proficiency in English and/or mathematics. Its highly collaborative model provides an innovative approach to developmental education by fostering open channels of communication, regular team meetings, and shared goals with the aim of providing a more personalized and supportive learning experience for each student. The CUNY Start Instructor possesses a clear understanding of CUNY Start’s English curriculum and the program’s pedagogical approaches for developing CUNY Start students’ readiness for college-level work. Reporting to the CUNY Start Academic Student Support Program Manager, the Instructor will perform the following and other related duties as assigned:

Instruction by Core Instructors

  • Teach two CUNY Start English classes of approximately 25 students each semester, or 50 students total, using the CUNY Start curriculum;
  • Teach CUNY Start curriculum in a well-managed in-person or online classroom that engages students in a manner that is consistent with CUNY Start’s pedagogical approach;
  • Collaborate closely with program advisors, teaching teams, and administration;
  • Comment on student papers to encourage development and revision;
  • Provide individual and small group assistance to students outside of class, as appropriate;
  • Participate in professional development meetings facilitated by CUNY Start English Curriculum and Professional Development team;
  • Prepare for, take part in, and help run orientation, student conferences, portfolio evaluation, and recruitment as appropriate;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Instruction Modality

CUNY Start may deliver instruction in multiple formats: in-person, online or as hybrid classes that are both online and in-person. Online instruction may be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous teaching that is determined at the discretion of program management. During periods of remote teaching, CUNY Start Teachers remain responsible for maintaining high levels of student engagement and enacting the CUNY Start curriculum with fidelity to the program model.

Guidance to Writing Assistants

  • Refer and guide students to CUNY Start tutoring for individual support outside of class; Model and provide tutoring, as needed;
  • Provide guidance on areas of need for individual students;
  • Coordinate Writing Assistant’s schedule to help ensure appropriate services and support are in place for students during class and outside of class.

QUALIFICATIONS

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and such other qualifications as may be necessary for the satisfactory performance of his/her instructional functions.

Please note that only current and former CUNY employees who successfully completed at least one term as a Cooperating Reading/Writing (English) Continuing Education Teacher in the CUNY Start program are eligible to apply, as this experience is required to be appointed to the CUNY Start Instructor title.

  • Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and team member
  • Computer proficiency using standard academic, administrative and office software programs/applications
  • Ability to productively manage conflict and adapt to change
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and experience fostering a sense of belonging among students
  • Availability to work evenings

COMPENSATION

The annual salary range for this position is $61,350 - $64,910 and commensurate with experience.
