SUMMARY
JOB DESCRIPTION
Performs routine repetitive work involving cleaning and housekeeping duties in University buildings. Work involves closely supervised cleaning and housekeeping duties. Employees are subject to daily changes in assignment and work is reviewed periodically by observation of results obtained. Work is supervised by the Associate Director of Physical Plant, Manager of Custodial Services, Manager of Residence Life Operations, Custodial Foreperson and Custodial Leadperson.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have attained an educational level sufficient to read, write, and perform simple calculations.
Experience not necessary; must be willing to learn and work.
Ability to work long hours while standing and to withstand the physical strain of cleaning work. Physical ability to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of buildings and equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Employee sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips and polishes baseboards, floors, and stairs.
- Sweeps, vacuums, cleans rugs and carpets.
- Dusts or washes furniture.
- Carries out and disposes of trash.
- Cleans restroom fixtures, walls, floors.
- Cleans windows and door glasses.
- Washes blackboards and water fountains.
- Checks and orders supplies.
- May act as Leadperson at special times.
- Performs a variety of routine custodial and cleaning tasks as assigned.
- Some custodial positions may require the operation of a University vehicle.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- May clean trash cans.
- May use blower to clear sidewalks.
- May change light bulbs.
- May be responsible for building security.
- Serves as back up to other departmental staff when assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must possess ability to read and write.
- Physical ability to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of buildings and equipment.
- Should possess some knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in such work.
- Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions from supervisors.
- Ability to communicate effectively with fellow employees.
- Ability to supervise the work of others when needed.
- Some custodial positions may require operating a University vehicle and if so it will be necessary for employee to possess a valid Texas driver’s license and qualify for university driver certification.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT
These positions will primarily work in the residence halls and will report to Custodial Supervisors/Forepersons in Housing Operations.
Work hours may vary and nights, mornings, weekends, overtime, on-call, emergency, and other events may be required.
