Engineer the security foundations that protect a leading university and shape cyber resilience for the future!
Macquarie University's digital landscape is growing in scale and complexity, and with it, the need for dedicated cyber security engineering capability. We are looking for a skilled Cyber Engineer to join our team, reporting directly to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in translating security designs and requirements into stable, scalable, and well-maintained technical controls that safeguard our people, systems, and data.
In this role, you will be the critical link between security architecture and day-to-day operations ensuring our security platforms are effectively engineered, configured, and continuously optimised to meet current and emerging cyber threats. Your work will directly strengthen the operational effectiveness of our cyber security function by improving tool reliability, signal quality, configuration consistency, and integration across platforms.
This position aligns with Macquarie University's strategic objectives for cyber resilience, regulatory compliance, and risk management. You will provide the technical foundation required to support current operations and future capability uplift, ensuring our security investments deliver measurable risk reduction. If you thrive in a collaborative environment and want your engineering expertise to have real impact at an institution that values bold, progressive thinking, we'd love to hear from you.
About the Role
As Cyber Engineer, you will design, implement, and maintain the security controls that protect the University's systems, networks, applications, and data from cyber threats.
- Design, deploy, and maintain security controls across network, endpoint, identity, cloud, and application environments.
- Deploy, configure, and manage security technologies and tools including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, SIEM, SOAR, EDR/XDR, DLP, email security, WAF, PAM, vulnerability scanners, CSPM, and endpoint protection solutions.
- Embed cyber security principles into applications, networks, and IT environments in compliance with MQ IT standards.
- Develop and maintain security automation through scripting, infrastructure-as-code, and policy-as-code.
- Monitor and analyse security events and alerts across networks and systems to improve detection coverage, alert quality, and enable prompt response.
- Support incident response by providing technical analysis, containment, eradication, and recovery support.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments, security testing, and risk analysis to identify security weaknesses and implement appropriate remediation and mitigation strategies.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, communicating clearly with audiences of varying technical backgrounds.
- Support the CISO in the review, analysis, evaluation, and documentation of cyber security initiatives.
- Contribute to audits, governance and compliance reporting, and the development of security policies, standards, and technical guidelines.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of MQ IT security systems and processes.
