About the Department

The world of business is changing and expanding in new and exciting ways. At Perimeter College, Business Administration students develop specialized skills in business fields and improve their ability to communicate, think independently and thrive in the workplace. The department serves 2600 Business pathway students and is comprised of 25 full-time faculty members and 21 part-time instructors. The department is home to the Economics, Computer Information Systems, and Accounting disciplines as well as the popular BUSA : Business, Values, and You introductory course. The Business Administration program emphasizes preparation for decision making in a business environment. Perimeter College faculty members have practical experience in a variety of industries. By drawing upon this experience in the classroom, they provide students with real-world examples to complement business theories. A student who gains an Associate of Science degree by enrolling in the academic pathway in Business Administration lays the foundation for a business career and provides an excellent jump-start for a bachelor’s degree. With the core knowledge gained at Perimeter College, students can continue specialized studies at a four-year institution, enter the workplace as a skilled employee or express their entrepreneurial spirit by starting a business.

Position Description

Perimeter College invites applications for the next chair of the Department of Business. As the chief administrative and academic officer of the department, the chair is responsible for overseeing the delivery of academic pathways and programs in alignment with the strategic plans of both the college and university. This includes hiring and evaluating faculty and staff, budgeting and resource management, and managing the schedule of courses to ensure that offerings meet student demand. This authority requires approval from the Dean and the Provost. Additionally, as part of the college administration, the chair coordinates departmental activities with those of other units within the college and university, collaborating with other administrators to support the development and implementation of college initiatives. This position reports to the Dean of the respective college or a designated representative.

The chair is the official representative of the department in all official communications with the dean, the dean’s office, the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the President, and other officers of the university, and also in all departmental communications with the department’s faculty and students. The chair is responsible for making an annual report to the dean of the college on the teaching, scholarly and creative activities, and service work of the department.

The chair’s key responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration with program directors and associate chairs to drive innovation in teaching and developing academic programs.
  • Ensure the quality of the instruction offered in the department; giving close supervision to the teaching done by members of the faculty. Consult from time to time with each member of the department regarding the nature, scope, and quality of the faculty member’s work. Maintain a general overview of the work of students in the department.
  • Ensure robust assessment practices at the course and pathway level to support accreditation requirements and excellence in teaching.
  • Develop, manage, and staff the department schedule of classes, prioritizing enrollment trends, course demand and capacity needs, and university strategic goals.
  • Assign courses within the department and maintain an equitable distribution of courses and sections. Prepare information regarding the courses in the department as may be needed for the catalog and transmit this material to the dean of the college or the dean’s designee.
  • Recruit new faculty whose qualifications are consistent with the objectives of the institution, and recommend appointments, re-appointments, promotions, and, consistent with tenure policy, dismissals of members of the faculty. Ensure department compliance with university policies and procedures related to recruitment, re-appointment, evaluation, promotion and tenure of faculty.
  • Support scholarly and creative activity in the department.
  • Lead the general direction of the work of the department, facilitating efficient and effective operations. Consult with the department’s faculty to develop and execute departmental policies in alignment with university and college practices and policies.
  • Serve as the direct supervisor for all faculty in the department, as well as associate and assistant chairs if the department has them, and also, directly and/or indirectly, staff in the department.
  • Plan the annual budget allocated for the department and consult with members of the faculty in forming the budget plan. Manage financial activity that may be required of the department.

The chair shall be evaluated by the faculty of the department at least every three years. This evaluation is conducted by the dean, who notifies the President of the results of this evaluation which is used in the overall evaluation of the chair’s performance. Chairs are also reviewed annually by their immediate supervisor.

Additionally, department chairs will be expected to:

  • Teach one (1) section of a three (3) credit hour/workload hour course during the academic year, for a total of three (3) credit hours per academic year
  • Participate in professional development activities, including leadership development and relevant training on software, reporting systems, USG initiatives, and standard operating procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or as they evolve.

The chair will join other new leaders at Georgia State University during a pivotal point in the institution’s history. In 2021, Georgia State welcomed Dr. M. Brian Blake as the university’s eighth president, and in 2023, Dr. Nicolle Parson-Pollard was appointed Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. In 2024, Dr. Barbara Johnson joined Perimeter College as its third Dean. The chair will have the unique opportunity to define and implement new initiatives informed by the university’s strategic plan ***Blueprint to 2033, Our Place, Our Time.***

Required Experience

  • Have an academic and teaching record suitable for tenure and rank at appointment as associate professor or professor at Perimeter College in the department of appointment.
  • 1 year of academic leadership experience in a higher education setting.
  • For INTERNAL candidates: must hold tenure and academic rank of associate professor or professor by date of appointment (July 1, 2026).

Required Education

Terminal degree in departmentally related teaching field at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Demonstrated record of academic leadership and administrative experience as a department chair, associate chair, academic program director, or center director.
  • Experience with innovation in teaching, program development, and enrollment management.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within and across departments, campuses, modalities, and support units.
  • Familiarity with accreditation requirements for accrediting bodies relevant to the department.
  • Experience with evaluation, promotion, and tenure in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in a 2-year, access college environment.
  • Experience with assessment and leading assessment initiatives.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and management of funds to support department, students, and faculty success.
