Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Deputy Chief Operating Officer & Associate Vice Chancellor for Operations (Deputy COO/AVC) serves as the senior operational leader supporting the Chief Operating Officer of Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). This position functions as the principal deputy to the COO, providing executive leadership across a broad portfolio of essential operational services that sustain campus life and institutional effectiveness. In the absence of the COO, provides leadership to the Division of Finance and Operations, including other Associate Vice Chancellors and direct reports to the COO as necessary to support efficient operations.
The Deputy COO/AVC ensures the delivery of safe, efficient, and student-centered operational support by overseeing parking and transportation, emergency management, auxiliary services, mailroom, environmental health and safety, campus card services, real estate, space planning, and conference and event operations. The role is critical in coordinating complex logistical planning for major university events and initiatives, aligning daily operations with WSSU's mission and strategic goals, and ensuring compliance with UNC System and state standards.
Preferred Years Experience,Skills, Training , Education:
- Experience serving in a senior operations role at a higher education institution.
- Knowledge of UNC System policies, state regulatory frameworks, and shared governance structures.
- Demonstrated success coordinating major institutional or public events.
- Familiarity with operational technologies (event management systems, safety compliance tools, parking/transportation platforms, campus card systems).
