National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health
The National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health, established at UNSW Medicine and Health, UNSW Sydney, is a significant national initiative dedicated to improving the health of people with intellectual disability.
Why this role matters:
The Deputy Director plays a critical leadership role within the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health (the Centre), working closely with the Centre Director, Chief Operating Officer (COO), and Consortium leadership to deliver the Centre’s strategic objectives.
This is a research-focused leadership position with a strong applied and translational emphasis. The Deputy Director provides strategic and academic leadership across the Centre’s national programs and initiatives, ensuring they reflect the Centre’s values of inclusion, evidence, and lived experience.
The role includes responsibility for leading key research and translation initiatives, managing a team of 3–5 direct reports, and contributing to the Centre’s strategic planning, partnerships, and external engagement.
Skills Required:
- A PhD or equivalent distinguished experience in public health, disability, health services, social sciences, or fields important to the Centre.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing teams and driving outcomes in complex stakeholder environments.
- Significant track record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact.
- Demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding contribution to research and scholarship.
- Demonstrated leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry.
- Experience in successfully recruiting and supervising high calibre students.
- Strong understanding of equity, inclusion, and co-production principles.
- High-level communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work strategically and pragmatically in a fast-paced, evolving Centre environment.
- Ability to contribute to the strategic vision for the Centre.
- Demonstrated capacity for strong, proactive and energetic leadership.
- Demonstrated outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to foster a strong sense of equity, fairness and ethics.
