Job Description

The School of the Humanities and Social Sciences is seeking an experienced Deputy Secretary. This opportunity is open to current University of Cambridge employees only.

Reporting to the Secretary of the School, the Deputy Secretary provides effective strategic development and management of School business. Working with the School leadership team, particularly with the Deputy Head/Director of Education on education strategy, the roleholder supports the Council of the School and its Departments in implementing their collective vision, and in problem-solving.

Key responsibilities include overseeing the educational framework, student recruitment, funding, quality assurance, and policy development, as well as managing change through cross-School projects and fostering collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the role ensures effective administrative support systems, continuous improvement, and governance compliance across the School and its Faculties.

The postholder will manage a team of 5 staff and work collaboratively with colleagues across the University to foster efficient, inclusive, and high-performing service delivery.

About You

Educated to first degree level, the right candidate would have experience of administration management at a senior level, leading teams with evidence of managing for quality results, working at a strategic or operational level to deliver positive planning and change. Experience of supporting and developing staff is essential as well as knowledge of the Higher Education sector in the UK. The ideal candidate would be highly proactive, persuasive and enthusiastic with an ability to influence and to negotiate. Strong planning skills, ability to build and maintain networks at all levels as well as a highly developed understanding of administrative tools and procedures are essential.

Temporary cover: This post is fixed-term until 31 October 2027 or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.
