Position Overview
NYU Tisch School of the Arts seeks an internationally recognized theatre designer to join its faculty at the senior level. Artistic and Research Profile
The ideal candidate is an accomplished theatre designer with a distinguished body of professional work at the highest national and international levels. Their creative practice demonstrates innovation, rigor, and deep engagement with contemporary performance, design theory, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The candidate’s research, scholarship, and experimental methodologies should be globally informed, forward-looking, and influential within the field.
The faculty member is expected to maintain an active and visible creative profile, contributing to the advancement of theatre design through original work, publication, exhibition, performance and engagement with the industry.
Teaching and Mentorship
Central to this role is a deep and sustained commitment to teaching and mentoring rising artists. The successful candidate will be an exceptional educator who inspires students through intellectual generosity, rigorous critique, and a belief in the transformative power of design. They will teach graduate levels, guiding students in the development of artistic voice, technical mastery, critical thinking, and collaborative practice.
The faculty member will play a significant role in mentoring students and early-career artists, fostering an inclusive, challenging, and supportive learning environment that reflects NYU Tisch’s global mission and values.
Leadership and Service
As a senior faculty member, the candidate will contribute meaningfully to the intellectual and artistic life of the department and the broader Tisch community. This includes curriculum development, program visioning, participation in faculty governance, and engagement with institutional initiatives. The candidate is expected to be a collaborative leader who helps shape the future of theatre design education at NYU and beyond.
Salary Range
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $110,000-$130,000. This pay range represents base pay only (for 9 months paid over 12 months) and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
- Internationally recognized professional experience in theatre design
- Demonstrated record of world-class creative research and/or scholarship
- Significant teaching experience at the university or conservatory level
- Proven excellence in mentorship and student development
- Commitment to global perspectives
