Director
Position Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations for the School of Arts and Sciences. Reporting to the Director of Administration for Social and Behavioral Sciences (DDA), the Director utilizes a hands-on approach to provide strategic oversight of financial and operational functions for the SBS Division's business unit, collaborating with faculty leadership and staff to develop and implement the financial and administrative infrastructure for SBS area centers and affiliated units/programs. Responsible areas include but are not limited to the Centers for African Studies, African Studies Association, Chinese Studies, Cognitive Science (RuCCS), European Studies, Global Asias, Latin American Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, NJ Center for Civic Education, Rutgers Advanced Institute for Critical Caribbean Studies (RAICCS), and South Asian Studies (multiple locations) and other academic units as assigned.
Key Duties:
- Provides financial oversight, the Director oversees the unit's financial services activities including but not limited to planning, budgeting, reconciliation, and stewardship of all funds and accounts. Provides financial advice and insight to the DDA, supervises staff, and represents the DDA, center directors, and its programs on a variety of committees and workgroups.
- In operations, the Director is responsible for all departmental/programmatic HR/Personnel functions, facilities management, and oversight of administering the area center's undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
- Works with the appropriate faculty committees, center/department staff, and Dean's Office personnel on the financial aspects of space planning, facilities safety and security, oversight of technical support staff and IT services.
- Works independently within broadly level objectives, performs professional work consistent with a comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP), and possesses an excellent understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology, and applied bases of accounting.
- Participates in increased transactional work within the business and administrative aspects of the department during times of staff transitions/vacancies, new system implementations, special projects, etc. They also provide cross-functional support for the full SBS Division.
Minimum Education and Experience
A bachelor's degree in human resources, accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices. A minimum of five years relevant experience in a financial/operations function, preferably in higher education and a research-focused environment.
Equipment Utilized
The position will regularly use conventional office equipment, including telephone, a fax/copy machine, and computer equipment and software, including email, Microsoft Office, Adobe, Discoverer/Tableau, Oracle products, SciQuest, Travel and Expense Reimbursement, HCM, RAPPS, ECRT, SIRS, BLUE, CSS, Degree Navigator, DICES, Sakai, Joomla and numerous other online accounting, business, and related applications.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position is a high-level administrative role and requires critical thinking as well as autonomy. Ability to lift 25 lbs.
