ESSENTIAL POSITION PURPOSE

The Director of Campus Ministry serves the University of Providence by expressing the Church's pastoral care for the spiritual growth and development of campus community through witness and ministry that is consistent with the Catholic Church’s mission in the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings and the charisms of the Sisters of Providence. The Director of Campus Ministry manages multiple facets of student ministries: spiritual development, catechesis, and sacramental preparation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. In supporting the mission and advancement of Campus Ministry, the Director is expected to:
    • Build and coordinate the Campus Ministry program comprised of the following: liturgical events, ongoing faith development programs, retreats, and service/outreach experiences.
    • Facilitate and oversee the campus ministry team in the formulation of departmental goals and objectives and gathering of resources necessary to achieve these goals.
    • Develop and implement strategies for the recruitment of students for the Campus Ministry program and scholarships.
    • Recruit new prospects or transfer students for the Campus Ministry program.
    • Visit High Schools and parish youth/young adult groups to recruit new students for the Campus ministry scholarships.
    • Fulfill the recruitment goals as established by the Enrollment supervisors.
  2. In advancing the mission with Worship, Prayer, and Spirituality, the Director is expected to:
    • Provide opportunities for involvement of the University community in the liturgical life of the Church and participate in liturgical worship.
    • Organize program and logistics of liturgical life at UP in coordination with the University Chaplain and Vice President for Mission.
    • Coordinate the RCIA program in collaboration with the campus ministry staff.
    • Offer on- and off-campus retreat opportunities and other spiritual programming.
    • Coordinate retreat programs and off-campus activities/pilgrimages.
    • Facilitate spiritual experiences for students/staff/faculty of other faith traditions (i.e. Praise and Worship experiences, etc.).
  3. In advancing commitment to Holistic Formation the Director is expected to:
    • Organize and support faith and leadership formation initiatives for students.
    • Provide presence and involvement in Campus Ministry programs and other University events (Ministry of Presence).
    • Counsel students/faculty/staff for mental and spiritual growth and guidance.
    • Present in classes as invited by faculty.
    • Form students as missionary disciples and train them to share their love of God and the Church within trusting relationships.
    • Create and nurture opportunities for faculty/staff/students to develop their understanding of faith, the Roman Catholic Church, and its integration into society.
    • Do general outreach to students on campus through one-on-ones and pastoral initiatives.
    • Facilitate inter-religious opportunities and provide for students of various faith traditions based on need.
  4. In advancing the commitment with Ethical Leadership, Social Justice and Missionary activity, the Director is expected to:
    • Encourage students to become volunteers and ethical leaders of change and progression.
    • Organize and support projects or programs that seek to transform students into ethical leaders who guide others through life.
    • Organize and facilitate service projects including longer in situ experiences.
    • Create opportunities for service and community engagement in Great Falls and beyond.
    • Help expose students to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and social justice issues through initiatives, discussions and experiences that ignite their passion for social justice.
    • Organize a Mission experience: organizes an annual mission program (i.e. Spring Break, etc.), reviews site, and accommodations, fundraises through community efforts, chaperones missionaries during the trip.
  5. In the general administration and development of UP CM, the Director is expected to:
    • Prepare and monitor the budget of the Department of Campus Ministry and Trinitas Chapel.
    • Evaluate the quality of programs, services, and personnel.
    • Interview and participate in the selection of assigned Campus Ministry staff; conduct performance appraisals and suggest professional development opportunities in accordance with University policies and procedures.
    • Oversee, advise, and approve CM work-study projects, functions, assignments, and responsibilities (i.e. approve promotional items, scheduling, event locations, etc.
    • Conduct regular staff meetings to facilitate CM work-study projects and provide faith formation to the work-study student leaders.
    • Participate in professional campus ministry gatherings at local, regional, and national levels, as appropriate.
    • Serve on University committees as requested.
    • Chair University committees as requested.
    • Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
    • Create program structure and report program participation statistics and feedback

ESSENTIAL POSITION COMPETENCIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in theology, pastoral/ministry or related field required; Master’s preferred.

Experience

  • At least 4 years of campus ministry or equivalent experience
  • A practicing Catholic who understands, appreciates, and will ensure the Catholic character, mission, and identity of the community; should be comfortable around young adults
  • As a minister of the Roman Catholic Church, the successful candidate will maintain a lifestyle that is publicly consistent with Catholic teaching and values
  • Strong pastoral skills with a theological framework for ministry
  • A demonstrated record of collaborative leadership
  • Provides effective management, supervisory, and organizational skills (i.e., judgement, appropriate confidentiality and budget management)
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the pastoral needs and spiritual development of undergraduate students
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the Providence charisms, mission and core values
  • Knowledge of Church documents related to Campus Ministry (i.e., Empowered by the Spirit and Sons and Daughters of Light)
  • Knowledge of Catholic sacramental preparation processes, especially baptism, confirmation, Eucharist, RCIA, funerals
  • Experience in working with young adults or college campus ministry preferred
